Such an epic start to the trip. Neptune tests everyone in some way or another. You were tested and found worthy!! FYI There is a reason why we use a double 8 or figure 8 follow through to tie into a climbing harness with dynamic rope. A bowline is great because when it's unweighted it's easy to untie. Great for things like sails. Not so good for the 1 Knott keeping you attached to the rope. Figure 8 won't loosen when unweighted and is still easy to untie when done.

Hey David, before too long you'll be diving off that same height of the mast to make perfect 10-10-10 splashless dives into the crystal clear waters of a secluded anchorage! Or not. 😀 Swimming with Manta rays is amazing. But just wait until you swim with a whale shark! Totally safe to do (check local laws first) and the big ones can reach up to 40 feet. Plankton eating bohemians so no "Jaws" worries there. So, only episode #3. I'm buckled in for the rest of your journey!

@@david_shih for the Indo-Pacific whale sharks...usually from 30°N thru 35°S. They migrate and can range very far above or below those points. Once you make it to the Western Pacific area, from say... Fiji down to Australia, odds should be pretty high of spotting some close to shore as they feed through their migration. The Internet has quite a bit more about the wheres and whens in greater detail.

Most of the worms are at the bottom of the tail, especially in Amberjack. Why don’t you slice the pieces as thin as you can, then lay them out flat on wax paper or some kind of tray and do layers. You can flash freeze them before you eat them, if they’re really thin, it shouldn’t take but a few minutes & to me it takes better cold. I like seeing you on these trips, you add a lot to the whole crowd and us at home!
@david_shih
Жыл бұрын
that's not a bad idea on the slice super thin and freeze, but from what i've read you need to get it down to -35 for an hour or so or the parasites live. i'm actually considering getting a special vaccine freezer about the size of a microwave for the boat for this exact purpose!

I think you hit the button with the worms/parasite remarks at the end. So often you see fishing and eating raw fish in the sailing videos here..seldom they talk about the risks. While getting sick by the sea..ya ya besides sea sickness😅..by the sea food can be a big problem when you are in the middle of the ocean or far away from good hospitals. Food security also a big item in a ocean sailors life, especially in the tropics. Waiting for your next video!!

Hey David. Great videos. Just watched one where you and Colin went up ur mast together. My only suggestion is to always use a second safety line when working up the mast. Our halyards get tons of abuse over their years of service, and even as strong as we think they are, they can break (or slip off a winch.). In fact, in ur video, look at how close your partner is to the end of the halyard on the winch. Holding with fingertips. One slip on ur partner’s part and the only thing that would have possibly saved you was the knot at the end of the halyard. Keep up the great work. Eric.

The grand debate -- Was that yellow fin or bigeye tuna? Via video off the Mexican Coast I said: Nope, they are bigeye. Plump with large chunky heads. Personal preference is still to steak the bigeye. Sashimi the yellow fin because the meat is much firmer and less rich raw. No sharks = No fish when spear fishing. My kids were called shark bait before they could do anything on a boat. Graduating to cockroaches once they could. I tell them all the time, I wish I could have skipped them and gone straight to having grandkids. Grandkids are the best.
