He is doing it because Rambo is a Vietnam war veteran while the sheriff is a Korean war veteran (the movie doesn't make this very clear). Korean war veterans felt a lot of resentment towards Vietnam war veterans due to the amount of exposure and publicity surrounding the Vietnam war in comparison to their own war which took place only years before. I was in the USMC. Our Company Gunnery Sgt. was a Vietnam Vet with 6 Purple Hearts and 2 Bronze Stars with Combat V. I asked him once what it was like coming back to the USA after such a brutal war. He told me a story of a time when he attended a University of Washington football game and the announcer asked that the crowd recognize him as a special guest, a local boy home from the war. He said the entire stadium started booing him. He looked me right in the eyes and told me it was the only time he ever cried while wearing his uniform.

For me, First Blood is far superior to the other Rambo films (and almost all of Stallone's output) ... the dramatic location, the atmosphere, the authenticity, profound themes ... love this film & I really can't say that about the others. The themes are still so timely and relevant. At the end when Rambo stands over the wounded Teasle, Teasle shouts 'Go ahead, you crazy son of a b***h! Finish it!' Who is, in fact, crazy? The ex-soldier that was simply defending himself? Or the horde of men that chased said ex-soldier into the wilderness with dogs, helicopters, rifles, the Nat'l Guard and bazookas?? And all because said ex-soldier just wanted something to eat. Smh
@voltaire6668
Жыл бұрын
It was very different in the book. Teasle was relatively nice to him at first. Took him to a dinner and bought him a hot meal. Then took him to the city limits and wished him well. Rambo even asks himself, "this guy was nicer than most, why give him a hard time?" To which he answered himself, "Just because someone smiles when they hand you a bag of shit, doesn't mean you have to take it." And then he turns and walks back toward the town, shit storm ignited. What a great line. I read it in 6th grade in 1978, and I still quote it to my kids today.

@@Monty2289 I assume you're young, that you would say something so ridiculous. You don't know better yet. You say Rambo is wrong for "giving off a SMELL of someone who could cause trouble?" Since when is a SMELL against the law? And how do you judge what KIND of smell is one that "Causes trouble"? The cop is doing something terrible. He is acting like judge, jury, and executioner. He is going way beyond his authority, thinking he is the king of the town instead of a policeman, who is there to uphold the law and not judge people. People have all kinds of burdens in life. some, like Rambo, are mentally ill, often because they suffered heroically, like Rambo. It's not up to a cop to come along and make their troubles worse. He should have dropped Rambo off at a diner, and made him feel at home. He could have dropped a hint that they like a peaceful town, and don't like trouble, which would have been fine, but you can't convict someone on how he looks. That's what racist people do.

Brian Dennehy was very good as the villain in the western Silverado as the corrupt Sheriff in that film and being able to do comedy in Tommy Boy as Chris Farleys father but First Blood was definitely was his most memorable as Teasel and the Director wanted Dennehy for the part. I remember when he played real life serial killer John Wayne Gacy in a tv movie in the 1990s.

I love this scene because it shows who a lot of people in law enforcement are. All they had to do was let him have a meal and he would have been on his way but instead they let their egos get the best of them.

There is a diner about 30 miles down the road let me make sure you get there. Dude takes him a mile down the road and lets him walk the other 29 miles while he’s starving. He’s a great cop. Guy deserves to be in jail himself

True actually driving him to the diner while pretending to be friendly would have kicked him out and avoided the whole movie ;)

Stallone deserves extra credit because he really took a beating making this movie. The part where he lands on the tree branch and shouts out in pain? No acting there. He really cracked a rib falling onto that branch. His hand got badly messed up by a squib as he was making his way toward the mine. Not to mention the director insisting that he redo the scene where he gets whacked in the spine by the baton over and over again. "How else do you want me to do it? In a French accent?!" Stallone mentioned pucker factor time when burly Brian Dennehy's character was called on to manhandle someone. "It was like having an angry circus bear mauling you" he explained. He recalled the fingerprinting scene where Brian nearly broke his fingers like pretzels. Listen to the audio commentary track and you'll hear the amusing stroy about the wild boar. Classic film that called attention to the plight of veterans.

Brian Dennehy and the helicopter guy play such great villains in that movie.

The helicopter guy was the worse of the two, in fact nuts, but Dennehy's character gave him carte blanche.

"Gonna take a bath this week?" That said all you need to know about the cop... Dennehy plays a great villain, and that's absolutely what he was in this film.

That Sheriff got what was coming to him, and he was very lucky he only ended up on a stretcher going to hospital , and not dead by Rambos blade back in the woods. Rambo did say after all, why you pushing me. And Troutman said to the sheriff you are lucky to be alive. I loved the phrase by Troutman, "a good supply of body bags"
@micnorton9487

Troutman also drew the comparison, John Rambo, 1st Lt, cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and meticulous training to educate him, he was in charge of million dollar equipment and competently commanded troops, a couple decorations, honorably discharged, no significant criminal record, killed in jerk water USA for vagrancy... If I was Troutman I would have said right off, you pushed him didn't you? You f***** with him, and then you got the horns... DOD is going to hear about you sheriff...

I will never forget the first time I watched this in 1982 in the cinemas I was like 14yrs old, jumped school with a friend caught the train into the city to see it, when we supposed to be at school. Never of imagined it was going to be a classic. Ive watched this like 100 times and still love watching it. So glad Stallone took the script, Hes just perfect the role fits him like a glove.

First Blood and Rocky 1 and 2 showed that Stallone could actually act in a dramatic role. Then Creed I and II, he deserved his oscars for those roles.
