One year into his telemetry rattlesnake tracking research project, our venom manager, Cale Morris shares some interesting reflections on the relationship between rattlesnakes and people.
A local homeowner that lives just up the road from us helped us discover that one of the four snakes that Cale implanted a tracking device into had decided his porch would be the perfect place to cozy up for the winter. What we didn't realize is that three other snakes had followed her to this hiding spot - all of them were snakes Cale had previously captured on PHS property and relocated.
Fascinating observations like these have countless implications for how these animals interact with us and the humans that they share this desert with. Ultimately, it is crucial to remember that these animals are an important component of our local ecosystem and play an important role in moderating rodent populations.
