It does my heart good when you bring these early solid states back to life Ron. I played a ton on Stars back in the day. The right spinner was key to big scores and they would jack the back legs to max plus angle the left flipper up a bit to reduce clean spinner shots at 1000 points a turn... of course we’d crank the back legs down a bit when no one was looking :-)

I think this type of issue with pop bumpers can be fixed by loosening the two screws that hold on the spoon assembly. Only loosen enough to jiggle the spoon so it’s centered and comfortable with the stick on underside of the bumper skirt. Getting that stick part in the center of the spoon makes for even response to the ball, no matter where it ouches the skirt.

Haven't read all the comments, but you need to turn the match on in dip switch settings. Also there's another dip setting that makes the bonus countdown count in multiples or singles. Looks like it's on singles. One other weird setting on the first couple of Stern games is you can make it a 2 player game via a dip setting. Apparently there was a 2 player backglass but i've never seen one.

It might scream 1978, but it would fit into a modern arcade just as nicely now after what you did to bring it to life. This is a really great and fun game. I like these older games that didn't theme themselves based on movies and the like. Even if some had similarities :) I do love the chimes. I don't know why, I just think chimes are better than any of the more modern sounds

@160rpm
2 жыл бұрын
Oh, I had no idea that Stern started out by buying up CC. But it makes a lot of sense actually.
@LyonsArcade
2 жыл бұрын
Yup. It's a great history of pinball, basically Harry Williams started Williams pinball in the 30's.... then hired Sam Stern to run the company at some point, Sam Stern eventually bought half of Williams and the company was sold in 59 or so... In 76 or so, Sam Stern and his son Gary Stern bought Chicago Coin, and turned it into Stern Electronics. They made pinball machines but also arcade games (as Chicago Coin had).... After they went digital, they actually talked Harry Williams, at this point well into his 70's, into coming out of retirement and designing pinball machines for them! So the old man, the FATHER OF PINBALL comes back after having designed 180 pinball machines in his lifetime, and designs a few more for Stern including the great Flight 2000. Stern eventually goes out of business, and Harry Williams passes away... but Gary Stern ends up as president of Data East, then Sega... and when Sega goes under, buys Sega out and creates the new Stern Pinball company which is thriving at the moment.

You mentioned on the playfield cleanup video that they put ceramic disk capacitors on the switches to lengthen the pulse, could your issue with the pop bumper be a faulty cap?
@LyonsArcade
3 жыл бұрын
Maybe.... the cap kind of sends the signal to the board that the switch is closed (it makes the pulse longer)... and the pop bumper is being triggered, which means the board knows that the pop bumper was hit, so you would think that the board would also know that the pop bumper was hit, to give you the score for hitting it too. I can't figure out why it would do 1 thing (kick the ball) but not the other thing (score the points) when the trigger for both is the switch being pressed.
