PART 1: • One of the Best Abando...
After hundreds of mine explorations and almost a decade, I really didn't expect to ever see an intact horse whim hoist. Horse whims are very rare, especially considering that most abandoned mines were modern enough that steam or pneumatic equipment could be utilized. While I have seen components of a horse whim, I had never seen the full system intact. Granted, I suppose I will never see one with a mule or horse attached... To our surprise and excitement, the incredible artifacts of the Old Dominion Mine did not stop at the steam hoist; deep within the mine we found a large room containing the only intact underground horse whim that has been shown on KZitem (at least to my knowledge).
This find ended up being just one of dozens of amazing artifacts that were left in this once-productive mine. Deeper into the mine, we find more steam-powered equipment, intricate miner's graffiti, and some spectacular geology.
I hope you enjoyed this two-part series. Please note that we explored only 25% of this very large mine, focusing on the known highlights. If time permits, I would like to revisit this site to document more of the stopes, side-drifts, and other workings that we skipped during this initial exploration.
