The placebo effect is an actual thing. Thinking you're not sick or have been cured can sometimes actually help. Similarly, the nocebo effect can make you sick when you think something will make you sick. However, I wonder if in this case there's also some confirmation bias because when you're not _that_ sick, you get better before you come to terms with being sick, so in hindsight you feel like you tricked yourself into getting better. But when you're really sick, you don't get better as quickly, so you come to terms with being sick, which makes it look like you get sick when you accept that you are sick, even though it's really the other way around.

On the subject of guided tours, the worst one for me, was when I was a kid. There was a group trip during October for a corn maze. It was a guided tour. For a MAZE. Doctor here, gastroenteritis actually refers to any inflammation of the stomach and intestines (literally: "gastro" = stomach; "enteric" = intestines; "-itis" = inflammation). The more common terms "stomach flu" and "food poisoning" would differ in what exactly causes the disease: stomach flu being caused by viruses while food poisoning by bacteria. Both of these can result in the irritation and subsequent inflammation of your digestive tract, hence gastroenteritis can actually refer to both stomach flu and food poisoning. So yes, "food poisoning" is also considered a disease! (Sorry Connor)

And I agree a lot with Joey that it's all about how do the museum presents the pieces and the general atmosphere of the place. It's only really worth visiting the touristy spots if you know a bit about them going in, imo. The crowds, costs, and waits put enough of a damper on the experience that going in blind can be a recipe for disappointment. Some of the tours and exhibits do a good enough job that you don't need it, but it's just a reality that not all of these places are up to that standard, especially accounting for different learning styles. But if you know a bit about what you're looking for and interested in going in, it's easier to find things to like.

Avatar 2 was a great movie in the 3D IMAX experience. My family and I enjoyed it, it was so gorgeous to watch and even though it was a bit long, I didn’t mind. It’s similar to how long the LoTR movies are where you appreciate the info and details into their universe. Also, in the US I saw a lot of promotions and advertisements for this movie. Everyone in my group of friends was talking about it and people are still watching it. I’m going to see it again now that the crowds have died down 😂

Poutine started as a low wage working class Québécois meal to go. It wasn't made to appear fancy. In fact, we were ridiculed for it and some elderly Québécois to this day refuse to eat it because they remember the stigma around it. You gotta try poutine in Québec before making your mind on poutine. Most provinces don't even have fresh cheese curds which is a game changer.

Yeah, gastroenteritis itself won't kill you. But if you keep vomiting and pissing out your butt you rapidly lose water, and if the nausea is so strong that you throw up from drinking water you might die from dehydration. xD They gave me an IV in the emergency room when I got the bug and I was hospitalized. I also got the stomach ulcers (gastritis) that Joey mentioned. Not a fun time at all. Lol.

As far as the great wall goes There are restored sections for tourists purposes which are the most packed And then there are probably some sections for preservation And then there are sections that are not really preserved which is most of it, those sections are not really opened up to the public but if you find a way to go there or find a guide who will guide you there safely then no one is gonna stop you From youtube videos some of those parts of the wall seem to be really overgrown and the most fun to hike on, but it is recommended to go with a guide because it's not exactly a normal hike trail that you can go off of anywhere you want As far as the history goes the wall wasn't built entirely as one continuous wall, it was built up over millenia now by various dynasties and states. some of the earliest efforts to build a continuous wall were by the first emperor over Qin Shi Huang (fate fans) 2000 years ago, by then there were already many walls built so it was more about connecting the different parts than about building a giant one from scratch (although there still was a lot of building). And today the newest and most famous parts of the wall that are opened up to the public were built by the Ming dynasty over like 600 years ago. If you go far enough you can really see how the building processes, architecture and the materials changed over the 2000 years depending on how old the section of the wall is and who built it (some of the oldest were actually built using mud).

Getting older when you've been to something so many times that you can map out how your day is gonna go that's when you know that it just doesn't bring that same level of excitement as it used to but you don't necessarily see that as a bad thing. Like with conventions, I honestly can only stand to be inside a convention hall for maybe 5 hours tops, maybe 6 if I'm in a panel or something like that. But when I was younger I wanted to spend the entire day in there even though I went to everything it had available for my age group. But there's a benefit to having a hotel room to go back to in order to unwind, recharge, and figure out what you're doing next. Because if you have a room to go back to at the end of your day inside the convention hall then you have a moment to decompress from being in that environment that really drains your social battery. Talking to vendors about having a low social battery at the end of your day there and hearing how they're on the same wavelength but they have to stay for the full day makes me appreciate their hard work.

The Netflix intro thing reminded me of when I had to deal with pretty severe depression. The amount of times I changed my mind about going outside while I was in the process of putting on my shoes was too much. Eventually I got into the habit of just wearing my shoes all day every day, just to reduce the amount of barriers I needed to overcome to actually go outside. That worked well for many years, until last year I got a fungal infection and I had to stop doing that

Connor's Avatar take is the same as mine. It's a good movie, the CGI is really great, but it's just too fucking long. I bet he fell asleep after they moved to the island. That's the part that drags on the most. That learning to adapt to the island life part really feels like Cameron wants to show off his tech as long as possible.

I think Joey is describing St Peters basilica. I recently visited Rome and while the Sixtine chapel is fine (the vatican museum is cool as fuck though), St Peters cathedral is overwhelming. It is truly a place that can leave you speachless (even as an atheist). So I think he might have gotten them mixed up (or I'm wrong and Joey really loves Michelangelo). Also, the colloseum is really cool if your interested in history. Yeah you've seen it a bunch of times and there are more impressive buildings, but you can really feel the presence of history when you visit.

I've only ever heard it called Gastroenteritis too, I've had it twice in my life. 8 days is an unusually long time though, maybe he wasn't treating it from the get go, if it was new to him. The treatment is rehydration powder mixed into water, because with the constant puking and arse water, you dehydrate really quickly. It's so horrible that I've got a few packets on standby in case I get it again. I also got ill on Christmas Eve and I've yet to recover. Luckily it's just a cold and not as bad as what Joey had.

All I can say is that it is hard to teach history to high school kids. I was lucky since I really like history, so I can shrug the boredom involved in it. I studied it back then since I know it is a thread that allows us to look back at the past. And hopefully, we can learn from it and avoid the very mistakes that they made.

@@ironduke3780 one of my history teachers (who inspired me to become one) made a really cool introduction to World war 1. She split us into groups of 2 or 3 and everyone got a made-up country and we essentially had the backstory of our country given to us and we had to see how we'd react to something like the assasination of franz ferdinand. Then we'd have to kinda roleplay what we'd want from the other groups and it ended up in a full on war lol

@@HocTap123 That is nice way to introduce the concept of military alliances and how it triggered the First World War. My fascination about the conflict started when I saw the beautiful tinted glass in a school hall which depicted the many allied nations and theatres of war that the allied forces had to fight, the regimental flags that were there, a captured regimental flag that was also in there, and the fact that the school hall was a memorial hall dedicated to the soldiers that died in that conflict. It was also opened by the Duke of York, the future King George VI and the father of the late Queen Elizabeth II. I guess seeing this beautiful school hall made me interested in knowing more about the conflict. I really think it all depends on whether a student is interested or not. The reason why I say that is because right now, I am interested in learning more about the Romans and especially the Eastern Romans. It all started because of a podcast 😂

Joey, I feel your pain. In Spain we usually use the Greek terms for medical stuff, so when I moved to France, or even when I talk to people in English they look at me weird. Or when a doctor here tries to explain a diagnosis to me and I go "... oh, so you mean [random Greek words]" *confused French Doctor* "yes... that... that's correct actually".
