Good explanation of why you home-school Ana, and about her autism evaluation. And you're letting us know more and more about Ana's autism. She's a unique person and that's great!

Elementary teacher here. I picked up on a lot of differences with Ana. A large portion seems to be from her lack of social awareness. Likely brought on by lack of time with school aged children. Its good you're looking into this.

Her lack of social awareness is directly related to her autism. Just one of the reasons we had her evaluated. She has time with school aged children every single day and has since she was 2 years old so, that clearly wouldn't be a factor.

I know 2 people with Ph.Ds who are on the spectrum. Most people who just brush up against them would never guess but the social cues and understanding emotional things are a big problem for them. Both were not diagnosed until they were adults so had lonely unhappy childhoods. Ana is fortunate to have you check this out. After all she has enough to deal with already. She has the best parents.

My great nephew who is a freshman is autistic. His dad posted that when he went to a game at school, he noticed a list on a bulletin board that was the Principal's Honor Roll 4.0 and his son's name was on the list. His mommy passed away from cancer about 4 years ago from cancer, so his dad is raising 2 boys as a single parent and doing a great job. David does well. He is very polite. I think he can have meltdowns, but not maybe as often as when he was younger.

In Australia a diagnosis can be beneficial in the education system ,so as Anna is homeschooled ,what is the benefit of a label ,the reason I ask ,I also bring up my grandchild ,he calls me Mum ,and I did not get a formal diagnosis because there was nothing to be gained , and as he is super confident ,I had concerns about the impact on his self esteem , 28:28

Ana ( as I'm sure you know) is also super confident and I feel part of my child maintaining her confidence is knowing without a shadow of a doubt who she is and what she's about. A diagnosis allows her answers and information, without guessing or being unsure. A HUGE part of her confidence with her living and moving around the world with an obvious physical disability and the way she handles staying confident despite people's misperceptions and ignorance is how much she knows and understands about her disability. I suppose I have the added benefit of having already raised her for 8 years while living with another diagnosis, prior to the autism diagnosis, so I knew this about her. Additionally, it helps me know for sure so I can handle challenges with her accordingly. My son is autistic and was diagnosed around the same age but as I'm sure you're aware, there are many differences between boys and girls with autism. Ana will tell you herself she appreciates having an actual diagnosis. In fact I just asked her for you and she says, "Now I know why I miss out on social cues and have issues with certain things. It all makes sense and now I can do more research and learn more about myself and then use that information to educate others so they will be more kind and respectful towards people with autism." So... we did what is right and best for our child just as you did for yours. They don't have to be the same decision or same reasons as we live very different lives from one another and our kiddos are two very different people.

Nope. No OCD here but there can definitely be overlaps in behaviors/mannerisms between OCD, ADD, and autism. However the whole picture is looked at and assessed and OCD as a whole is something entirely different.
