As a Mexican and a fan of your channel, as well as a traveler and expat myself, I am happy that you have mentioned you're aware that there's an issue. The issue is not tourism and people relocating, at least how I see it, the real problem is that locals cannot afford in their own city due to the presence of foreigners who have a much higher income and who have changed the market in such a big scale. This is not exclusive to Mexico City, but as my home country and a place where I have lived in the past, I see how the situation has scaled and becoming a true pain for the locals. I see how much you have made an effort to be respectful, you've learnt Spanish and that's amazing, but you're just an exception to the rule. I do believe CDMX is one of the best cities to live in, but money wise only upper class can afford to live in the nice areas (Condesa, Roma, Juárez), must working class people have to live in the periphery and travel 2 hours by bus/metro everyday to get to their jobs... anyways, enjoy it!

but the problem IS people relocating. Relocating to a place that already has a housing problem is only going to make that problem bigger and if the people relocating also have higher purchasing power of course the market is going to shift towards them. But what I hate the most is that most of these new colonizers are from the US and the level of entitlement is so unreal that they expect everyone to adapt to them and speak english even though that's not the official language

I visited Mexico city for the first time in October and had an incredible time. Lovely is the best way to describe it - how lush it is, the cafes, the museums, parks, street food and markets.... Everything was just so magical and I had been eagerly waiting for yall to make it to CDMX!

It’s so weird to see Mexico City through your eyes, but also so cool! I recognized so many places you went to and I agree, they’re great. I’m so glad you enjoyed your stay there! However, the topic of gentrification is really delicate in Mexico City because people are forced out of their homes to accommodate people... well, like you. And I don’t mention it to gatekeep or anything like that, but it’s a sensitive topic and I’d recommend you do your research in Spanish before even considering it. Moreover, I love Mexico City but it’s simply not safe, not even in the rich parts of town, especially as a woman. But to end in a happier note, the guy in a bicycle honking at the beginning was actually selling pan dulce! I really recommend you try conchas and polvorones

Yeah, in Copenhagen Zoo we saw several animals that seemed to be really not happy to be there, there was a lone Polar Bear that just kept swimming and diving in a loop, 2 wolves that were running around their space in a loop, and apparently this “looping behavior” is a sign of depression, and possibly OCD. The Central Park zoo in NYC infamously had Gus the Polar Bear who was so mentally unwell after his female companion passed away, they had to put Prozac in his food. (Gus eventually died from cancer and they reworked his space so now it holds a few grizzly bears instead.)

Yeah I honestly didn’t know that zoo’s had this issue. We have never been to one before but it was an eye opening experience. It makes sense that it would create stress in the animals but we just hadn’t thought of it before.

@@LeahandLevi yeah, zoos should have animal psychologist on hand to help keep the animals stimulated (make feeding a challenge, maybe add something to their space to play with) and to look out for any distress. I think this is still a very new thing in some places. They just don’t understand how animals react to being confined.

I'm mexican. What you have heard about gentrification and that according to Mexicans foreigners bother us, that is a great marketing lie from the new communist government that entered 3 years ago, these governments cause division and polarization because it is not politically convenient for them to Mexicans make friends with our brothers from the North. We Mexicans love that foreigners come to CDMX, we know that it is very good economically speaking and in terms of jobs, we are used to Canadians and Americans coming to our beaches since they were children. So welcome and do not listen to the lies of communist governments.

It’s very strange that people would consider foreigners visiting a city of over 20million people “problematic”. It’s a bit condescending, Mexico City specifically has way bigger problems than foreigners visiting and spending money there. I’m from northern Mexico and really cannot stand being in DF for longer than a couple of days, but really, do not bother worrying about those comments.

Obviamente el problems y la queja no es por el turismo, es porque desde la pandemia se han mudado muchos extranjeros y en ciertas zonas de la ciudad las rentas se han hecho insostenibles para los locales, al igual que los precios de cafes y restaurantes.

I’ve been poor and I’ve had money. Currently I’m poor and don’t foresee that changing. The fact is that MOST humans on earth are simply looking for the best option possible. I’m looking around at options to become and expat because I can’t really survive in the United States. My intent is not to cause trouble in the place I end up. My intent is simply to live. It’s a horribly imperfect world we live in. There’s no good answer. But certainly I’m not TRYING to create a problem for my fellow humans.

I was in Mexico City back in 1985, just after the massive earthquakes. I'm asking an honest question here, why do people think Ex-Pats moving to Mexico ruins it there when we welcome Immigrants from all over the world to come to our countries? People are living in Mexico and adding to the economy. I don't understand. Also, I don't think I could swim in that rooftop pool. Being able to see down through the walls would paralyze me.

*And true about the zoo thing. I think game parks/nature reserves always feel better coz the animals are allowed to roam wild. Rather than an enclosure. Coz I can see why people do zoos but as someone born and raised in Africa (Zimbabwe in particular) I'd choose a big safari style park when possible to keep these animals coz even though it's still animals in captivity they have absolute kilometers and kilometres of their own land/space and people do the tour to drive to see them rather than having them in a small enclosure that ends up feeling like a cage to them. But having said all that I do see that it would be unrealistic space wise especially for countries where the animals are not native. But in a Utopian world there's nature reserves and game parks galore over zoos.

I've been Mexico City a few times and they aren't showing you the pollution, how dirty the city is, the cops with machine guns on the streets, the crime, the threat of getting in the wrong cab and being taken to an ATM and robbed, the counterfeit products at local markets, the low grade headaches you have from the elevation combined with the air pollution, and much more. I found Guadalajara to be much more clean, friendly, and great food.
