The whole point of the song is about contradictions, how society tells you to be all these things, how they don’t seem to make sense. The lyrics are supposed to point out these hypocrisies and try and expose these issues. The bridge contains a message of acceptance, as Taka sings “I am who I am, no matter what, never changing, no matter what”. He realizes he needs to be his own person, not being someone else, according to society’s standards. The accident was supposed to be a wake up call for him, and the dancer in a red dress is a Bian Lian (meaning "Face Changing" of Sichuan Opera) dancer. It's supposed to portray his old self/reflection who's to remind him of his origin (that he's a Chinese afterall), he realises and begins to dance in a traditional way following the Sichuan dancer, at the same time he's tempted copy his peers' moves which is a western dance so he's mixing the two, but couldn't "fit in" to his peers no matter what. He falls several times in attempt to copy his friends' ways out of peer pressure. In the end, his friends began lifting him then pushed him down, then out of exhaustion he finally broke free. He's back to his old self and learned his lesson (the kid was just a representation and not literal that he's back to being a kid). Overall, the depiction varies for individual and it's for general. It doesn't only apply to asians, but for all. The title of the song also contains the most important contradiction: “Stand out, fit in”. It means to be yourself or to “stand out”, while also conforming to society’s standards, or “fit in”. This message is especially resonant in Japan, where conformity is expected and individuality isn’t as prominent as it is in western countries such as the US, although many Japanese artists have been pushing to change this standard. The song is a criticism of societal hypocrisy, and a damn good one at that. Directly referencing double standards while pushing for individuality is what makes this song so powerful, and its message is important for anyone to hear, reinforcing that they can be themselves, and don’t have to be what society wants them to be.

@@xxForgottenx This. I don't think it is so much about changing the standard but rather the standard needs to change. We should "Try to color inside their lines " more and be rebels and vigilantes less.

I think the dance represents our choices made in life. Each move changing our outcomes in our future.. It’s a beautiful symbolism of the decisions we make in life. Ultimately the boy gets a second chance to do it over differently.

More One Ok Rock! Their origins are in rock but they've gone more mainstream in their most recent album to cater to the Western market. Please check out live performances as they're amazing live. For rock, you can check out their earlier songs - The Beginning, Nothing Helps, Kanzen Kankaku Dreamer. The vocalist Taka sings a range from rock to ballad, and their acoustic lives are great too.

Damn that music video hits home. Being Asian in a mostly white area sucked. I remember me and the other Asian kids were teased like that. I saw some try to fit in and did whatever it took to fit in even hating other Asians. Now that we’re older those kids who hated being Asian so much that they refused to learn their respective language and accept their culture regret it so much and wish they were bilingual. I was an outcast but I don’t regret it at all. Ironic how Kpop made korean culture so popular when those same kids who listen to kpop now could not even tell the difference between korean or Chinese or who we were.
