Women are being turned away from chronically underfunded homelessness services.
Last year alone, 36,027 people experiencing family and domestic violence who requested long term housing were denied access to a home.
That’s 96% of all requests. That’s why the Green shave called on the Government to:
1) Double the housing and homelessness funding in the budget to build more public housing and ensure no woman is turned away when seeking accommodation and support.
This will cost $40 billion over 10 years.
Labor found $50 billion in extra military spending.
2) Coordinate a national freeze and ongoing cap on rent increases to protect millions of women and children from unaffordable rent increases and potential homelessness. Stop further evictions into homelessness also relieves pressure on homeless services..
3) Establish a public property developer to build 610,000 quality homes to be sold and rented at prices people can actually afford, so women can afford to leave abusive relationships and have a home to flee to.
Women fleeing a violent home shouldn’t have to chose between violence and safe home.
