Thanks for this review! Wanted to share an interesting factoid: Amyris pharmaceuticals, the company which formed from a lab at UC Berkeley, discovered the process for manufacturing squalane and hemisqualane derived from sugar cane. Amyris owns both Biossance and JVN. Jonathan is the celebrity ambassador for Biossance and the founder of JVN hair, so it’s no surprise that these ingredients are so heavily pushed in both companies’ products and marketing. Amyris also owns Pipette and Rose Inc. FYI a lot of Pipette products are actually dupes for Biossance 😊

I got a deluxe tube of it from the Sephora Bazaar, and I have to say I liked it more than any other ‘air dry’ product I’ve tried before. My hair is naturally baby fine and frizzy, and I let it air-dry for most washes since i get too much damage from heat drying, so finding a usable air-dry product was a nice surprise. Usually I enjoy using the Kerastase Blond Absolu Cicaplasme hair primer as an air-dry Cream; it detangles well without leaving my hair limp. The JVN air dry cream is a lot less expensive. I don’t use any other JVN products, as my hair loves silicones.

Thanks for the video. I use to avoid silicones as per CGM but Manes by Mell provided a great explanation on why silicones are not bad. You just need to know how to treat them. She uses science in her explanation like your self. Oils and butters can provide product build up just like silicones, you just need to clarify as needed. Since I have been doing that on a biweekly or monthly basis as needed, I haven’t had an issues with silicones. I have been enjoying AG Hair Care. They have great packaging now. I also like Verb. Not sure if you have tried either brand.

I can totally understand that! I have ‘weird hair’ that doesn’t seem to want to conform to a category, plus I bleach it (highlights) and color my roots to hide the grays. My hair thrives on soluble silicones and dies of frizz overload whenever I use a silicone free product. Plus it’s fine and thin, so anything made with plant oils makes it whither in limpness and greasiness. I wasn’t able to use any JVN products, although I do like the air-dry cream as long as I use a silicone conditioner beforehand.

You’re not alone. I need to wash my scalp twice a week, or else it gets really itchy. I think you need to find what works for your own body chemistry, it’s not a once size fits all. I know she uses a clarifying shampoo when she washes once a week, if you’re washing twice a week then you would once use that clarifying shampoo every second wash. Using a clarifying shampoo twice a week is too much.

The Ordinary came out with a hemisqualane product years before Biossance and JVN existed. In my experience Hemiqualane penetrates the skin faster and deeper than squalane, so it’s good for fine and/or thin hair and it feels good on the skin. Completely agree with you. It’s like a bunch of companies all received the same report from futurologists than ‘clean beauty’ would be the new trend in the late 2010’s and 2020’s, and they all mindlessly jumped on the bandwagon including Sephora which is absolutely disgusting. What they forgot to predict was that at the same time beauty consumers would also become a LOT more savvy and question the veracity of the bogus ‘clean beauty’ claims!! Not to mention the negative experiences of clean beauty products spoiling and going moldy before you have the chance to use them all up, which is extremely wasteful and bad for the environment. I love to sit back and watch how savvy beauty consumers have become compared to when I was young! I was a beauty junkie since the 90’s, and back then we were few and far between that were reading studies and questioning formulations. I love you all to bits my beauty savvy fam haha 😅

@@kimhwood I agree with you. The Aveda products I loved 20 years ago are all gone. My hairstylist sold me their whole hydration line a couple of years ago when she was working out of an Aveda salon, and it left my hair a limp greasy disgusting mess. The phomollient mousse was legit terrible and useless. I used to love their volume booster mist so much, but now it doesn’t volumize my hair anymore. I find Davines is way more effective and like Aveda used to be, but nowadays I’m leery of any ‘clean’ haircare and Davines is so overpriced (their hair masks are amazing though). I’m currently using the Native Essence shampoo bars, and really like them. But I tried them out as I was having issues with itchy scalp, and wanted to see if my shampoo was the problem. Hard water mineral buildup in my hair is a real issue where I live, I have to chelate once or twice a month.

As someone with natural curls that sometimes air dries I can say that silicones help a lot in keeping my hair from frizzing out. Thanks for always giving us such a thorough review! I've only tested their air dry cream, instant recovery serum, and pre-wash scalp drops. I like the air dry cream for my wavy hair which I've repurchased. Still, I wouldn't say that it's better than my favorite curl cream that leaves my hair better hydrated, frizz-free, and shinier. But I just like to have options. I also like the instant recovery cream. Actually, that one and the air dry cream together gives even lovelier results on my hair. The pre-wash scalp drops I feel make my scalp too oily. Even though I follow instructions I find that it doesn't wash off easily from my scalp. I have a normal scalp, and whenever I use it my hair gets greasy quicker after washing. So I've reserved it for once or twice-a-month scalp treatment and for the lengths of my hair.

Hemi squalane is sold by the Ordinary as well as squalane. It's a thinner version than squalane. I tried it as well as squalane and I much prefer squalane for its moisturize/soften/ benefits. I think you were being so generous in saying the brand isn't intentionally trying to be misleading. I think that while JVN is a wonderful person himself, his brand, like all brands, are trying to sell product and make money at the end of the day and being misleading if just a part of that process. The unfortunate thing about clean beauty is that these brands would all likely be highly aware of the misinformation but since there are very little regulatory policies on how they label their products, they would also know that they can easily make claims of misinformation and get away with it. Meanwhile, most consumers are not aware of science but are aware of the buzz words in 'clean' beauty and would buy it up without doing research like you. This is why I am appreciative of your channel because in this little corner of the internet, your research and knowledge is impacting your reach and has improved the health of hair in so many, including myself. Love this review! I have long, fine, naturally dark blonde hair and was quite excited to try JVN. I have the volume shampoo, instant recovery, air dry cream, blowout milk and shine drops and have watched all of his tutorials on how to use them! Pros: The instant recovery serum is DEFINITELY the winner, it's really lightweight and works great for a quick hydrating refresh on post-wash days. The shampoo definitely makes my hair feel and look much thicker for a day or two and has really helped with some scalp irritation I was getting from a coconut oil based natural shampoo. I can also go without washing my hair for much longer than any other that I've tried (about 4-5 days). Cons: I also don't see any significant difference from the blowout milk, especially in conjunction with instant recovery. I've blow-dried with and without the milk and don't see a difference. The air-dry cream doesn't seem to do very much other than make my hair harder to brush and the shine drops are fine but even 1 or 2 drops are slightly too greasy for my personal needs. I will definitely be buying the shampoo again and instant recovery is my new favourite, but not rushing on the others.

This brand actually isn't the first I've heard of hemisqualane. The brand Seen also highlights it as a star ingredient in their hair products which are marketed for consumers acne-prone skin, and it is also apparently a star ingredient in Tia Mowry's new drugstore hair care line as an alternative to silicones. It might be the latest trendy ingredient, sort of like how niacinamide took over skincare for a bit. Those with low-porosity hair tend to prefer silicone-free products for good reason, so silicone alternatives in hair care like hemisqualane do have their place outside of the clean beauty movement.

I like the pre-wash oil. I put it on a couple hours before showering and it gets washed out during shampoo. I like the bisoprolol and rosemary ingredient for a scalp treatment.

I'm a research scientist and I often search for specific clinical trials. Just spent about 20 minutes searching and cannot find anything registered about hemisqualane in either the skincare or haircare space in either North America or Europe. Very unsure what the brand means by their "clinical" claims....

I have had some real hits with JVN hair personally - the shampoo and the conditioner, but especially that complete conditioning mist. But I do use it a little differently, I prefer to use it between washes on dry hair, when my hair needs a little bit of extra moisture. I spray onto my hands and comb through with my fingers, then brush out. When I use it this way I really love that my hair immediately feels soft and silky but not greasy or weighed down at all. I am in total agreement though that brands really need to stop demonising other products or ingredients in order to hype up their own - The misinformation is not good!

Silicones being bad for the environment and aquatic life are not just made up claims. They’re very true. Microplastics and nano plastics are a problem.

@@travistroxell2542 that's a different claim though, I've only seen people saying it's bad for your hair, coats it with a film, damages it etc. Not what I was talking about at all.

Hi Abbey! Once again you made an excellent review. I love watching your videos. I always learn a lot. Could you please review Kevin Murphy? Is it worth it?! Thank you so much for all your work.

I've been using the line for a month. It has helped my hair loss. I wash my hair every 3 days . I have normal, thinning hair, and I like the line so far. Is it life changing? No. But it's nice. I might go back to my Redken shampoo. Haven't found one favorite shampoo yet.

The pre-wash oil has been so good for my itchy flaky scalp. I keep it to scalp and roots while using the ogx coconut oil to lengths and ends. It definitely helps with clarifying the scalp and it has soothed my itchy flaky scalp a lot. I don’t see the need to use coconut oil to the roots since my roots are healthy and coconut oil makes them oilier so the combination works for me. I haven’t tried their shampoos but I am looking to try them since the pureology/k18 shampoos don’t cleanse my hair enough. I have deduced that my hair is thicker/oilier than yours so I adjust your recommendations to my hair type. Still love the content ❤❤

So… do these companies not know that they’re being misleading to customers when they make false claims? Or are they fully aware there making false claims but no one’s here to hold him accountable so they just do it? I appreciate you giving us the straight story!

I’ve been curious about this brand! Thanks about covering it. By the way have you watched the Blowout Professor’s KZitem channel? He disagrees with your shampoo technique of emulsifying it in your hands before washing.

I used the JVN Air Dry Cream to style my naturally wavy hair. It didn’t really do anything that the air wouldn’t do by itself and did not hold in my curl. I prefer the MOP Curl Defining Cream.

I've been using the prewash oil for some time now and unexpectedly, it had a very nice effect of balancing my scalp, I now can shampoo after 3 or 4 days (before I had to wash every 2 days). The benefits appeared after 2-3 weeks! I was very pleasantly suprised! (I just wanted to help hair growth when I bought it!)

I have the volumizing hair care set, hair oil and styling lotion. They do a good job on my healthy, non damaged hair. I still prefer Oribe Gold Lust but it is significantly more expensive than JVN.

I would love to get your assessment of Nioxin shampoo and conditioner. I’m curious about the ingredients, as I’ve been using it exclusively for about a year and it has regrown a decent amount of hair, and my strands have never been softer or shinier. I’m also using the Elizavecca treatment and the WOW shine spray thanks to you! Great recommendations!

I think the most popular product of JVN’s is the air dry cream which you didn’t talk about. I didn’t think I liked it at first but when I style it for my wavy hair like a curl cream I actually really love it. Thanks for the honest review and calling out the questionable “science” claims

i agree, i didnt like the strength conditioner. It left my hair more tangled after a shower rather than my other favorite sephora conditioners. The softness washed off really quickly after rinsing it off.

I heard that when switching from using silicones to silicone free it’s important to do a really good cleanse and get the silicone off of the hair so the next ingredients can penetrate the hair. So you mentioned that silicone doesn’t penetrate the hair, but they claim hemi squalane does, would it be important to do a thorough detox to remove the silicone buildup to allow the hemi squalane to actually work and condition the hair?
