Just out of curiosity I did an Instagram poll the night before this video came out. The question was "Did you know phantom is a recessive gene?" Roughly 125 answered, 35% answered yes, 40% answered no and 25% didn't know what phantom was.

You are right; it used to be standard guidance that you want patternless reds or yellows to "switch" the base color of your dark base harlequins. So a lot of red harlys and creamsicles today have recessive phantom genes compared to dark based geckos.

I have talked to quite a few crested gecko breeders at reptile shows and many do not know genetic meanings like recessive, dominant or co-dominant. Their understanding of genetics is subpar to ball python breeders. It makes sense there’s much confusion.

Thanks for this video! I’m new to crested geckos and just bought 10 phantom babies that I plan on raising up and holding some back for breeding. I love learning about the genetics of the morphs and this was very informative!

This made perfect sense as I bred 3 females to go with my Lilly Whites. I had 3 lovely Pink and white geckos to breed once they grew up. From each female I am getting Lilly Whites and phantom Lilly whites. They are very unusual and the fact that all 3 females gave me these I wondered where it came from. The red I bred to get the Pink and white females also is Phantom but red with red phantom back is not so obvious. Now I can see it. Thank you for putting this together.

Wonderful video. Something I'd like to mention is that I've noticed there are a few variations with phantom lilly whites. Some phantom lillies have a thick, solid white bar on the side. Others, however, like my orange phantom lilly white (cheezit, photos of whom are on my Instagram) have a white bar of pattern, almost like a quadstripe, and the rest of the pattern almost fades as it goes towards the belly. In addition, some phantom lilly whites have a decent amount of dorsal coverage, and even drips. This often develops with age

I learned this my first two years of breeding. I bred my phantom tangerine pinstripe to my pinstripe male and 100% of the babies two seasons in a row were patterned. I was disappointed but learned something on my own. (I already had a basis in reptile genetics from breeding snakes and was originally told there were no inheritable morphs in crested geckos and it was all random) lol

This is very interesting. I paired up my phantom female to one of my Lw males hoping I would make some nice phantom LWs but I guess I’ll have to wait another generation. Thank you for the knowledge shared.

Nice video! 100% heterozygous for a recessive allele like phantom is a real thing. When the recessive gene is visual it is 100% homozygous. That said, Good job on this breakdown👏 . You should label your 100%het geckos for phantom to be transparent

Funny enough, I have a very muted hypo yellow phantom female that I didn't notice as phantom when I purchased years ago. I bred this gecko to another hypo cream phantom white wall pinstripe male and have only gotten 100% phantoms this year lol very surprised . After your video it is funny though. The geckos are not making too many hypo phantoms Funny enough. Gonna hold back and see I suppose is some go hypo. Thanks again!

I have a question I have red male and he's been breeding this years its my first time so I'm still learing about breeding and trying to get the best babies I can. Hes bred Once with a dark harlequin and once with a yellow tiger. The babies I have from the dark harlequin gave me the same dark harlequin as the mother. With the yellow tiger I have red tiger so far with 2 eggs hatched this week. My question is, is there a reason I'm not getting red phantom with my pairings? Is this what I should expect or will I get an odd phantom somewhere?

If I'm right then all my babies are 100% het phantom? the female geckos I've paired with the male are not het phantom because I've seen there parents and grandparents and none are phantom and that's why the babies are not phantoms but these baby now are 100% het phantom? I’ve got a question brotha, if I have a 66% het axanthic gecko do I have to pair to another het to get a visual axanthic?
@Sostic
2 жыл бұрын
Yes to get an axanthic you would need to pair to an axanthic or a 100% het axanthic. 66% is the chance your gecko is carrying the gene, there's a 33% chance it isn't and is just a "normal".

i'd like to try to produce red base lilly whites. but i've never breed or dug into cresties. i have gargoyles and if i'm going to breed cresties. i wanted to start on the higher end morphs. Since I'm already into gargs. What would you get if you breed a Lilly white to a redbase patternless. would you get possible panthoms, more standard lilly white and other %50 red base, or what. if anyone could answer this it would be nice. As i'm looking at getting a standard lilly white i've found for a good price and i know is healthy and i am looking at the many redbases on morphmarket.
