This is so fascinating and wow I agree this auction is way more humane than the auctions in the midwest of USA; where you actually see horses being sold and resold and some being carried off to slaughter down in Mexico - so whatever this community is doing is great - little bittersweet to see moms leaving without their foals but so nice the overall experience - i might go visit next year!

My thoughts exactly Prince. Couldn’t agree with you more ! I purchased my ticket for the boat ride already for 2025. It’s the 100th event, so it’s supposedly going to have a record turn out. * l personally think foal weaning is such a sad time ;( I hated weaning Patriot, but the vet was concerned over over nutrition, so we start it at 6 months. But I’ll cherish those memories for life when Patriot, Javelin and I would go on adventures

I bred horses for many years; Thoroughbreds and TB Belgian crosses. I left the foals with their dams for a year, and the mares had one foal every two years. This is often the case with wild horses - they do not reliably have a foal every year.

Thanks for sharing Sherin ! Very informative information. I bet the TB and Belgian crosses were magnificent. 1 year sounds like the perfect age for foals for remain with their dam.

I really appreciate you talking about and explaining everything bc I think this is unique and special for this community in NC. There’s a channel Camilles horsemanship she lives near a wild herd. Every spring they watch out for orphaned foals. This year they saved Piper. She was a week old. They have another they kept he’s now 4 his name is Ranger. Check them out they are all horsemanship with kindness. I tell everyone to check out your channel too you care about the horses and what’s best for them. Loving the videos ❤

This was the most beautiful video! I felt I was there with you! And I loved your reading of segments of the book! Brought back memories! I'm sure Misty of Chincoteague fueled my love of horses! I still have the book for nostalgia sake! I'm 63 now and have a herd of 8. And I'm just as much in love with these creatures as I was as a little child! Im hoping to visit next year for the 100-year anniversary of the pony penning days! Maybe I'll see you there! It's been part of my bucket list for as long as I can remember! Once again, thank you ❤

I think the suggestion of putting the mares into auction with their foals kinda lacks any further thought. Taking away essential members of a herd with predetermined ranks and dynamics every single year would ultimately hurt them. I mean just quick example, Summer the lead mare, what if she has a foal and it gets sold at auction? Now the herd is without their lead mare and they have to redetermine ranks all over again. Not to mention removing a large majority of the breeding mares every single year just to keep them with their foals would decimate the herds gene pool and very quickly reduce the herd sizes. This would be fine if it was like the BLM mustangs, who are extremely overpopulated and starving, but these are well taken care of and managed. They have done the most humane thing they can for these horses, but eventually foals do have to be separated from their mothers. The only difference between here at the auction, and later with their new owners, is time. Giving the younger foals extra time with their moms is extremely ethical, many auctions will seperate them despite being too young. I think other options could be discussed, like perhaps mare loans or optional buy ins for slow weaning processes, but essentially selling off all the breeding mares and destroying the herd every single year? Not a great idea
@Curioushorse
Ай бұрын
I actually agree with you entirely on this, and appreciate the informative response. The mares need to stay with the herd to maintain stable herd dynamics. I briefly separated my #2 mare Janana from the herd ( long story), but my herd was unbalanced and unsettled until she came home. 🙏 🌸 🙏

Well any that went to Amish will get no empathy or be treated nicely.... THEY ONLY CONSIDER THEM AS WORK ANIMALS OR MONEY MAKERS AND DONT TAKE CARE OF THEM MEDICALLY OR FEEDING!!!!!!!.. THEY SHOULD NOT BE SOLD TO THE AMISH.... WORST PEOPLE TO OWN HORSES!!!!!!
@lostribe5130
Ай бұрын
I do think it depends on the particular Amish buyer. One of the KZitemrs I follow what a really nice horse from some Amish recently. It did not appear to have any fear or have been mistreated at all. But yes for the most part they use them for workhorses, but I think some of them are also just learning they can make money by trading and selling.
@Haven633
Ай бұрын
I hate this stereotype, go to an amish auction for real. Those horses are some of the most well cared for out there. There is always going to be a bad apple in a bunch, but thats everywhere and everything. Generalizing a whole group for something you heard once is insane.
@redheart227

@@Haven633 go to an auction where Amish drop off their broken down and sick horses, with broken legs never set, worked to death with sores all over their body, feet not taken care of. I am not talking about horses raised to be sold a prime auctions where money amount is the price. I am talking about the ones they throw away for the last bit of money they can get for them. Go to Bowie's auction look at them there, go to horses heroes rescue, go to Amarillo farm rescue. GO TO BIG HORSE RESCUE.They are all throw away auction horses from Amish. So don't tell me about a stereo type... IT IS A FACT!!!?

Fyi wild horses usaly get bred almost, after the foal is born in what is called foal heat..have one over and over. They inter breed.. and some develp onto diffent groups( bands) and sometimes a stallion will steal another stallions mares. Some times there are sons breeding moms or siblings..so alot of them are interbred..i know atleast thats the way it is with wild blm horses but, you pay alot less, and get to take a horse home. ( actully there are too many wild blm horses that they cull them. Im not an expert. I just reserch alot of differnt topics,

I had to wean Patriot at 6 months, per vet orders :( because she was at risk of developing OCD as a result of potentially growing too fast. Patriot, Javelin used to ride in the woods and go on lots of adventures, and it was devastating when it stopped, but Patriot and Javelin are still very close today ( fence weaning) and will be reunited soon. *The young foals in the video which are the fall pick up, I believe will go through the weaning process the first week of October.
