I'd honestly say that, yes, while the "cycles of violence" is one of the large ideas of the game... it is first and foremost a character study of Ellie and Abby, and an examination of their inability to deal with it, the unhealthy coping mechanisms they take on, and the lengths they go to get the closure they need. THIS is what I love about the game: the excellent character work. This is what is interesting to me because the game uses atmosphere, tone, VFX, animation, performance, and the gamefeel to make me connect with (and sometimes be in conflict with) the two main characters. As odd as it may sound, it perfectly conveyed their emotional states to me. To the point that for those first two Ellie days, her and mine anger was the same. The end of Day 2 and seeing the cost this trip was having on Ellie snapped me out of it and I just wanted her to return home. This is when I became a passive observer. I felt like a parent who could only watch on as their child continued to take actions that were ultimately going to be harmful to them. And all this that the game made me feel was incredible and kinda unmatched. Also: the fact that one can go through the entire game with only a handful of gameplay kills (like less than 5, if that) on the hardest difficulty adds another wrinkle to the story a player can experience. And the game DOES constantly tell the player that running away is a valid strategy. And the player has stealthy movement options and tools that can allow them to just sneak by enemies.
@NoCluYT

The game does well with characters, but I feel that it makes a mistake in it's theme. It tries to paint revenge as inherently bad, but only one character got revenge in this story and that character went on to have a second chance at life. Meanwhile, the victim of revenge that ALSO ended the cycle of revenge ends up losing everything. I think you solve that one glaring issue by letting Ellie kill Abby.
@elliehedges6755
2 ай бұрын
@@NoCluYTdoesn’t Abby only have that second chance at life after not killing Ellie and Dina? That to me seems like her forsaking revenge.
@SidPhoenix2211
2 ай бұрын
@@NoCluYT Abby only gets that second chance because pursuing revenge left her empty. She achieved her goal but she felt nothing. AND she fractured her friend group in the process. None of it helped her. In fact, acting on her vengeance only came back to bite her in the ass as pretty much all of her friends were killed as a result of what she did. That doesn't sound like the game painting one revenge as bad. What helped her was helping others. And at the end of Day 3, she chooses not to take any more revenge (by killing Dina), and chooses to let her go and just go away with Lev instead.

Completely disagree that it nails characters. I actually think fundamentally Last of Us part 2 doesn't have Ellie in it, or at least what makes Ellie, Ellie. Ellie in Part 1: Weakness - Being alone, the last one left. Goal - Keep her loved ones close. Purpose, saving the world. Everything Ellie does in Part 1, every challenge she faces, every decision she makes. Serves to challenge these themes. The ending is so impactful because in order to fulfill her purpose, she has to become what she hates. She has to leave her loved ones, and end up alone. Hence the quote "everyone i've ever cared about has left me." Thats not even getting me started on Joel and his arc. Last of Us Part 1 works, solely because of its characters. Part 2 doesn't. Because 1 they forgot what made Ellie, Ellie which wouldn't be THAT bad. Except for the second flaw, none of these core traits guide any of her important decisions in part 2. Making her feel directionless. Hell, her PURPOSE. Is pretty much completely absent from the game. Imagine Walter White, without his Family, imagine Joel without his need for a daughter. They got rid of her hook. what makes you root for her. I could talk about this endlessly but. Part 1 is the best dual character study ever created in Media. Part 2 is a directionless mess, which gives purposeless characters, shallow meaningless excuses to create surface level events.

You had such detailed decsriptions of how rain fits into each game's environment. I never actually made the connection with Heavy Rain's rain doubling as an invisible timer, but maybe because it's been so long since I've played it. I also just recently played TLOUP2 so I loved the amount of commentary on that game as well. I surprised myself, but I came away thinking it was a masterpiece. No notes. Thank you for making a video about rain that was made for my niche interests! Wind Waker has an amazing example of rain. At one point in the game Ganondorf curses the Great Sea into Endless Night causing rain and storms while also transforming the main Great Sea theme into this evil foreboding version of the song mixed with Ganon's theme. Great video! I watched the whole thing waiting for the part about Breath of the Wild, which in my mind is the definitive game about rain. Rain is one of the main systems that BotW uses to force players to engage with similar situations in different ways. In sunny weather you can climb to higher ground to gain an advantage over your opponents, but if it happens to be raining you’re forced to find an alternative strategy, even if it’s the same camp of bokoblins you’ve already beaten five times. If you happen to have electric arrows they’re more effective when it’s raining, though if it’s a thunderstorm you may have to swap to less effective gear and weapons. It’s misunderstood by some stubborn players who refuse to try new things and choose to wait out the rain instead of finding new paths and strategies, but if you accept is as part of the constantly changing conditions of the game it can really introduce you to fun and creative new problem solving scenarios. The breaking weapons are another part of that system; if you accept that your weapon selection is constantly evolving and is sometimes to your advantage and sometimes something you need to work around it can be really fun, or at least way more fun than stubbornly farming your favorite weapons over and over.

It can often be a wonderful thing to listen to it against the hood of the car in GTA, the grassy fields in Zelda, or the asphalt and tree leaves outside my window. Rain often feels like the only way to make me stop and just exist for a bit, and I've probably not played a game with it where I haven't just sat still and listened for a bit in, imagining how the rain would smell and feel. Wonderful video, I'm very happy to have stumbled upon it. Genuinely thank you.

I love this video. Especially the structure/framing. Alternating between TLOU2 and other games to keep two throughlines, both rain in games and the story of TLOU2, is such a clever way to make the whole video feel cohesive even when you're talking about a bunch of games and a bunch of ways that rain is impactful in them. I really love this video, it's really well put together.

TLOU2 is a masterpiece. Just because it doesn't make you feel all warm and fuzzy, doesn't mean it's bad, it's just not trying to make you feel all warm and fuzzy. That it makes people feel at all is commendable but for those who remain open to the story being told even after that scene, may find far more complexity and subtlety than what the game's detractors would lead one to believe.

With that being said, Abby’s story is fundamentally flawed for a multitude of reasons… abrupt introduction to destroy narrative structure and tension… overt humanisation to increase likability…

Another thing that I really like is when the sun peaks through the clouds after a thunderstorm and creates this very special lighting conditions with stark contrast between dark wet surfaces and gleaming highlights on them. I haven't seen many games yet that did this right, and it requires a good HDR screen to experience it to its full extent. One game that IMO really nailed it is Avatar Frontiers of Pandora, in its windswept grasslands biome.

Funny how sometimes we know things without really knowing it. TLoU is one of my favorite games and stories, meaning both games combined (cant play one without the other). And all these concepts with rain and sun, I knew that but never really.. processed that. Very well made video, also +1 for Returnal, that game is never praised enough. Subbed.

cyberpunk's rain leaves me wanting for it to be just that tad bit better. There are no splashes on the street and no streams off of buildings and street lights... but there's something super calming and immersive to just chill in my rayfield and sit listening to and watching the rain.

Haven’t watched the video yet so maybe you talk about it, but the one thing that stood out to me about GTA V that no one else seemed to care about was how the rain stopped when driving under an overpass. It is such a universal experience but the way the sound design changes for that split second was more immersive than anything else.

I have vivid memories of the rain in Skyrim, particularly the sounds. However I'm not sure whether those were from the original game or from a mod I installed (I moded the game a lot!). It was already great playing with headphones and virtual surround sound but when I switched to my 7.1 home theater system it sounded so real and immersive that one time I just stood there in game and listened to the thunderstorm surrounding me for like 15 minutes.

Even though I've been really interested in video games for a while, namely the more narrative heavy ones, and watched a lot of game play videos, I've only recently acquired a laptop thats capable of running more beefy games. I started a playthrough of the RE2 remake and I have really been enjoying the ambience created by the rain. I know it's like, super tropey to have it be conveniently dark and stormy when a tragedy takes place, but it just fits the vibe of the game so perfectly. I loved wandering around the police precinct listening to the rain hammer against the windows mixed with the sounds of distant zombie growls, and it makes the inner parts of the precinct where you can't hear the rain extra tense. Now that I'm in the sewer section I kind of miss the rain, it's all quiet and creaky down there 😅

I love rain both irl and in video games. There is something fascinating and at the same time melancholic in a gloomy and stormy day, a feeling that touches my soul. Among the video games that use rain as a pillar of their art style but also as a tool to convey a particular atmosphere or narrative themes, the ones that come to mind are, in addition to those already mentioned in the video, Halo 3 odst and Alan Wake 2: In the first, the rain gives the city of New Mombasa (the game's setting) immersed in a dark night and illuminated only by the neon lights of streets and buildings, a unique atmosphere, almost like a detective noir (the soundtrack in this sense is top notch). In Alan Wake 2, the rain is wonderfully realized both from a sound and technical point of view. Exploring the dense forests of the Pacific Northwest, immersed in the fog and darkness of the night, pursued by the increasingly heavy and noisy rain (which also has an impact on the level design, many areas are flooded and access to them is not permitted, or at least not immediately) gives the game a spine-chilling atmosphere, simply beautiful.

That opening must be how my dog pictures the smallest amount of rain outside. It can be a sun shower outside, light drizzle, not even enough to make you wet, just damp. Nope, she is sitting in the cage, watching the door incase water leaks in. Then again, she was a stray as a puppy, so maybe its ptsd.

There's the rain element in Silent Hill 1 and 2; as both games feature a world that morphs to reflect the trauma of a certain character in each, rain symbolizes the literal despair that is ever present, though varying in prominence. The rain generally appears upon the transformation to the Otherworld, especially in the final acts of SH1 where it adds a layer of visual chaos amidst the monsters and darkness, to the point it tanks the PS1's framerate! Finally for a more solemn use of rain, check out the "car scene" in Silent Hill 3, which is a beautiful exposition cutscene even for 2003! It's not a pre-render, so ideally watch from the PC port or one where it was emulated.
