Great bargains, Jane. Here in North Yorkshire my local Lidl opens at 8am. I get there at 7.45 to be first in the queue when it opens. I ho swiftly to the shelf where they display the "Too good to waste" boxes of fruit and vegetables. They contain about £15 worth of produce for £1.50. Generally I buy two, and that's enough to eat lavishly for a week. God is good . Every blessing to you and Mike.😊

This week I used my £6 M&S reward voucher, quarterly credit card reward so free money for just using their card. I pay it off every month. I got 3 bags of frozen veg (spinach, green beans and chargrilled Mediterranean veggies) plus some reduced fresh broccoli. Cost me the voucher and 1p!! I was clearing out and found a very old wallet containing $43 in US dollars. I took them to the Bureau de Change and got £30.27 in cash in return. I spent £29 of it on reduced meat (diced venison x 2, sausagemeat x2 and a rump steak) plus plain Greek yoghurt and a bag of organic flour. I also visited my community food shop and got 4 lamb burgers, a bag of mange tout and a large bag of tenderstem broccoli. All free as it's a saving supermarket food going to waste project. Lots of good food at no extra cost to me but it took time and legwork. You are so right when you say time is a frugaller's super power! 🙂

My bargain was finding a used bread machine at a thrift store, complete with the manual and cookbook. Last winter I taught myself how to make artisian bread in my dutch oven, but this will be nice as it makes a loaf that can be sliced into square slices. So thrilled as I'm tired of buying bread.

I'm planning on a very low spend August, so I can focus on using the older food, and make sure I'm not letting my garden veggies go waste. I will restock my long term pantry as sales come up, but it will be more streamlined inventory, so I can keep it rotated better. You did a great shop! Like you, I never pay full price for anything! I enjoy your channel so much! Greetings to you, Mike, Mary, and Dolly! I rarely shop for everything at one store! I start in my own, freezer, fridge, and pantry then short date stores, then discount grocers, Aldi, Lidl, and loss leaders at local markets! We live in a tourist area so do very little shopping in our regular markets or even farmers market as people come in from all over to shop there and the prices are somewhat higher than I can find closer to home at a farm stand or two. We grow what we can but the Canadian wildfire smoke last year blew thistles that are killing anything in the ground. We are mowing our garden several times a week. We are growing in our cold frame and large pots. I am harvesting yellow summer squash, and herbs at this point.

A croissant loaf, what a wonderful idea, I've never seen one before! That Berrien bakery is famous though, that's where they do the buckwheat croissants. I'd never heard of those before either and my friend in your neck of the woods sent me a photo of one to prove they really do exist. Our bakers often do a zero-gaspille with yesterday's stuff at half price out on the counter, I like the serendipity of it, as well as the savings of course. BTW, I went into our local le Grand Frais after your vlog about it, amazing place! Pricey for many things of course but some great deals, and such a nice experience and ambiance. Hi Jane and Mike, I am fortunate to have a few cheaper grocery stores in the area fairly close together and I shop each one for their particular bargains. I always hit up the clearance meat section and freeze the meat immediately but I have noticed more people perusing the clearance meat section whereas I never did see shoppers there .before. I shop loss leaders and sale items only and menu plan around that. I am much better about maintaining my “ must use up” list, which has really reduced my food expenses and my food waste. With food prices as they are ( haven’t seen prices go down at all) I can ill afford to let anything go to waste. Every Saturday I make a beef or chicken vegetable soup or stew with whatever needs using up. Fortunately I like soup!

Great deals for sure. Unfortunately, the sale prices now are more than the regular prices not that long ago, and I honestly don't think that prices will come down anytime soon. I don't buy much in the grocery store at this time of year, but the other day, thought that we should check out the butter substitute that normally costs $7.99 (CDN) for 340 grams. It was marked two dollars off! I took the last four of them. We had actually gone in to get some pork fat, which I like to render for lard, and I use the cracklings in cookies as a fat and nut substitute. It is $1.30 a pound, whereas the hydrogenated lard (which I won't eat anyway) is $4.00/lb. Anyway there wasn't any, so I asked the butcher to order three more kilos. That should hold us a while.

Those are great deals! I'm in charge of a service project with my church and we are making a spaghetti dinner (noodles and tomato sauce with side salad, bread, and some dessert options). The dinner will be served at a place that offers lodging for people that have to travel so far for treatment. In the US, it's similar to Ronald McDonald house, but it's more for grown ups instead of families with children. But we have a RMH at this hospital, this is just another place to help with that need. I'm going to be asking the church members to donate towards the dinner. Like, maybe someone doesn't have the time to help with cooking or serving, but they can buy a package of cookies or pick up some of the veggies we need to the sauce. I'm going to keep my eyes open for things. We're not planning to grocery shop until next week, but we have church potluck this week and next week. I found potatoes on sale (10 lb for 2.99 USD, I think that is 5 kilo), so I'm going to make a vegan chili and baked potatoes. I have all the seasonings, the tomatoes, the beans and the peppers. I'll cook all the veg and seasonings the night before, then I'll throw it in the pressure cooker at church during service. I'm going to pre-bake the potatoes probably on Friday. I'm going to see what else I can cook at the same time to save on the use of gas with the oven. Then I'll just warm the potatoes during church in a low oven. Next week on Tuesday I'm going out of town for a major shop with my best friend. It's a bargain grocery store called Sharp Shopper that has great prices but you don't knwo what you will find until you get there. The next weekend we are having a get together with our sister churches to have church at a state park. So there will be lots of people, but we will have more people to cook things. I'm planning to make a mac and cheese bake (Annies brand, marked down to $.35/each) and this recipe that looks like lasagna, but you mix the tomato sauce with cooked macaroni and layer it with a sauce of cheese and cottage cheese. Macaroni is really easy to find. But I'll eb keeping my eyes open for options for potluck and possible options for the dinner at the place by the hospital. Local to me, we have several Kroger's, 2 Walmart's, a Sam's Club, 2 Aldi's, and several dollar stores. Remember to keep eyes peeled for bargains! I went in a store to get cleaning supplies, and they had beans in bags 1#/$.99 which is a GREAT PRICE!

I haunt an Amazon Fresh warehouse near me whenever I have time and am close. There have been thousands of dollars of first rate food on and off. A week ago Monday, someone must have been tipped off. There were cases of fresh raspberries, strawberries, and many other amazing things. When I arrived randomly, they had already filled their Lexus SUV and other larger cars and had other family members arriving to take stuff. I barely got a single package of raspberries and one of strawberries and a few unripe avocados while they had cases. It was like a feeding frenzy, no joke.

I shop carefully, but I also buy what I want. Sometimes it's a great price and sometimes it's just a regular price. I won't compromise quality. For me and my family, being mindful as much as possible, means we can buy what we want if not on sale. I don't pay full price for most things, food and non food items, so it balances out. I think as long as one (like me) is debt free and has all of their financial ducks in a row, then buying non sale items sometimes is just fine if it's a want. Of course it's a score if one never, ever pays full price for groceries, but I think for many that is unrealistic. Thanks for sharing 🥰💐🌞🏜💗✝🇺🇲

Hi Jane and Mike, we are headed to France for a week's holiday. We intend on buying food from the supermarket and cooking it in our holiday home. Is it worth downloading any apps for that short amount of time. If so which ones do you recommend? Many thanks xxx

No, please enjoy your holiday. Food is expensive here. Whilst you’re here for the week, you can try lidl, Netto and le clerc as they’re the most reasonably priced.
