My wife and I are sailing around the world in a small (34ft) sailboat. We often radio these big ships to say "have you seen us (visually or on radar)". Getting run over by one of these huge vessels is our greatest fear, which is why we invariably call them. They are always very polite and often change course to give us more room.
@Akt_gaur
4 жыл бұрын
yes sailing vsls are also cause of fear for us so we always do good watchkeeping to avoid any collision situation
@stephenburnage7687
4 жыл бұрын
@@Akt_gaur Good for you. Around Central America, however, we came to the conclusion that many short handed vessels do not keep a constant watch and rely on alarms to identify risks to navigation. We could see them, of course, first on the AIS (~ 30 miles) and then visually (~10 miles) but by their bearing it was obvious that they could not see us. We would radio them at about 10 NM and they would confirm that they could neither see us on radar or visually (and a sailboat we have a mast head light) but took our course and position to take avoiding action. Some have told us that they still could not see us at 5 NM, which for a ship with limited maneuverability doing 18 Kts is too close for comfort! This last month we installed an AIS transponder, so hopefully they will now see us far earlier.

Till now I have come across many sailing boats . And it's really good to know that you have installed AIS transponders . It's hard to see you guys from such big ships at longer ranges
@stephenburnage7687
3 жыл бұрын
@Ryan Yes, we can try that but we are already running the mast head tricolor (that sailing vessels are allowed). Our experience is that we are not visible until about 3 to 5 miles, most nights, which gives big ships comparatively little time to maneuver. Hopefully adding an AIS transponder will give them a much larger margin to react. We came close to being run over by a ferry in the Sea of Cortes, who was actually maneuvering to avoid another large vessel (freighter) and doing so came within a half mile of us. Terrifying!

I was a sailor from 1977 to 1980 and was employed by the Nedlloyd. sailed many times through the Suez Canal with destinations in the Persian Gulf or to the Far East. brilliantly portrayed the speed through the Suez Canal, what has changed a lot in the last 40 years. there was no bridge there at the time, and no extra canal at the Bitter Lakes for the ships going North. then you had to wait on the Bittermeren until the last ship of the convoy was in the Bittermeer before the convoy going northward was allowed into the canal. It is now better arranged with the helmsman, we got up for 1 hour and 1 hour behind the steering wheel and that was quite intense .... even though the cargo ships were only half the length of the Emma Maersk at the time. I recognized the monument again, I still have a photo of it in an album somewhere. thank you for letting us experience your experiences, looking forward to new recordings.

Middle Eastern accent by the captain of the merchandise. Overwhelmingly fascinating sandy Suez canal. It is the crucial narrow passage from Middle East to the West for merchandising. It however, gets blocked often due to the strong wind that brings the sand into the fairly less depth canal obstructing the passage of cargo ships. Wow! Over 500,000 dollars just to cross the canal! Insane! Thank you for showing us this marvellous. Somebody should make a film over this canal and its life.

@Anzu Wyliei Operating more than 700 vessels globally Maersk is continuously reviewing our fleet composition to match current and future operational requirements. In the latest review, it has been decided to divest eight vessels to external parties, with deliveries expected from mid-September 2020 to the end of this year. Upon handover, these vessels will be under technical and crew management by their new owners, and Maersk plan to time-charter them back to the fleet for a period. The length of the time charter will vary from vessel to vessel. With a revised mix of owned and chartered vessels, Maersk will have more flexibility of adjusting our fleet and capacity to market demand going forward. In deciding on which vessels to be divested several factors have been considered for example age, efficiency, network requirement, alternatives available in the market, etc. With these divestments Maersk will no longer own Dutch flagged vessels. This is in line with our Flag Strategy and will reduce complexity and cost of running our business, which has also been a factor in adjust the number of seafarers employed by Maersk Ship Management BV (The Dutch Maersk entity) accordingly. It is our intention to discontinue the employment of officers and ratings, except for Captains and Chief Engineers, by Maersk Ship Management BV. Maersk has initiated the discussion with the Works Council of Maersk Ship Management. As soon as we have reached an outcome this will be communicated directly to affected employees. Maersk will no longer be able to assign the trainees and cadets to Dutch flag vessels. We will, however, offer the current trainees and cadets to complete their seatime onboard of other vessels subject to finding availability under current crew changes restrictions. . No change for Top2 on divested vessels In order to retain experience in the fleet, Captains and Chief Engineers will not be affected by these changes and will continue their employment unchanged. Captains and Chief Engineers will be assigned to other Maersk vessels when their respective vessel have been delivered to their new owners. No change for crew on other contracts Crew on the vessels above flying Hong Kong flag and crew employed on other contracts than those under Maersk Ship Management BV on the vessels above flying Dutch flag, will not be impacted but planned for other vessels in the fleet. Questions If you have any questions you are welcome to ask them to your respective Manning Office. The eight vessels being divested will be invited for a telephone conference shortly to answer their questions directly. Yours sincerely, Tanuj Luthra, Head of Fleet Operations, and Niels Bruus, Head of A.P. Moller - Maersk

I always find it amazing to see the ocean, canals, rivers, storms in high sea. I wish I could spend my whole life sailing the sea, it seems to peaceful. Nothing to worry beside your ship. Instead I'm unloading those ships now, from what I've heard I'm paid better than the crew and I go come every day. But idk man, sailing seems just so much more of a nicer life experience.

I remember the transits so vividly, even though it has been about 12 years. It was so peaceful, but, boy was it HOT! I had to stay on the bridegwing wearing a ballistic vest and watching out for my ship to the port side.
