Yes!! You will love it. Makes bin clean up so easy. The worm bin limits are only due to the pest that will come in. The worms will eventually eat anything that was once alive.

That is a fabulous idea. I look forward to seeing how that comes along. I did something similar. I dug a 4×6 hole in the middle of my garden, about 4' deep. I added lots of scraps, unfinished compost, added two cups of red wigglers (from my local bait shop) and then over time I kept layering scraps of all kinds and more compost. Now I have worms all over the place. I have to explain that I live in the SW and my dirt was dead when we moved here. This with my chickens changed everything. Before I was spending a fortune trying to bring in compost.

My daddy always said you gotta plant three seeds. One for the worm, one for the crow and one to grow. I like worm bed idea in the raised beds. Wish I had thought of it. You could use a five gallon bucket. Just drill a bunch of holes in it. Also some 4” perforated pvc pipe. Put several in the bed in different locations. That way it wouldn’t take up so much room and distribute the worm food throughout the bed.

I have been using worm bins in my raised beds for about 2 years now and they work great. I got the idea from Angela from “Growing in The Garden” who does the in-bed worm composting also. I have a stainless-steel compost bin from Amazon that sits on the kitchen counter, it has 2 charcoal filters so I never smell it at all. I empty the compost bin into food-grade 3-gallon pails that I get from the local grocery/bakery for free then drill holes in them. I usually add shredded paper to mine at the bottom and top and wet the contents before covering them. I started with a bait container of red wigglers in each bin as I filled them and my 10 beds are full of worms now. When the worms have processed the contents of the bin I empty it on top of the bed and refill the container. I am sure you will like yours as much as I do mine. I love your videos, hope you have a great garden this year.

As far as the inground worm bed goes, we actually have some raised concrete block beds and instead of incorporating a feed system into the bed, we just added several pounds of red wigglers to each bed. Usually, I'll come back and mulch the beds after they get established with crops and put wood chips or grass clippings on the beds depending on whats planted in each bed. Cardboard is a good source here, so we usually have alot of that incorporated into the soil as well. I like the idea of the little bin inside the bed, but after looking at the cost of it, I believe I can pretty much make one out of a 5 gallon bucket that'll do the same thing.

I have seen videos of people making these systems w 5 gal buckets. My only thought about this is what is the point of doing this vs a worm bin? Maybe if you don’t have a lot of space? I have only been raising worms for a year or so, in bins and a bathtub, as well as overwintering them in in my covered unplanted raised beds. In my experience, the worms will eat and poop in the same place. I can see them going in and out of the holes in the sides, but I don’t think they will leave much excrement once they are outside the bucket. Anyone have experience with this type of in-bed worm bin?
@bradjohnston8687

@@billmcauliff7823 with plants like squash, the roots will find their way to the beneficial microbs. Heck, I usually put my food scraps in my compost, which after finished is usually my main bedding for them along with cardboard & such paper products. It is just another way to use up kitchen scrap & benefit a specific spot/bed. They will migrate around the bed too.

I have high hopes for your in-bed worm farm! I've been doing the exact same thing with food-grade buckets from the big box store (I drill holes in the sides and bottom, and secure a lid on top), and I've had great success. My raised beds are open on the bottom, so I didn't even need to add worms -- they just moved in on their own.

I like the idea of having my worm bin right in the garden so it's sort of a OneStop effort instead of processing it once in a worm bin and then having to add it to the garden. I plant pretty intensively and densely so taking up that much space for the worm bin wouldn't work in most of my beds but it is pretty ideal for something like squash that can be planted pretty far apart because they take up so much space.
@jonniricard5383
Жыл бұрын
I like that idea too. I wonder if you could make a smaller version drilling holes in a smaller plastic bin with a lid. Seems like you could make something smaller that would function similarly. I thought about using a cereal container. Tall but narrow and putting scraps in there. I thought maybe of putting two in a bed that are smaller and maybe the worms would migrate back and forth and work aerate my bed. What do you think of that idea?
