Until I saw the video (on a different site) of the ship's ropes snapping, I aways thought the number of mooring ropes was total overkill. I have more of an appreciation of what they do to keep the ship secure at the pier

I know my username does not reflect it (long story), but this is the first hurricane named after me! I am Kirk (go ahead with the jokes, I have heard them all…and before you go Star Trek on me, Captain Kirk was actually named James Tiberius Kirk. Kirk was his last name. Kirk is my first name.). I hope you, “spin” out of its path. The good news is that it is mostly just making waves out in the middle of the Atlantic. And I have been known to make my own waves. Be safe, have fun.

Update: Base on on your Oct 03 at 02:42 UTC position and speed of 19.2kt, I calculated your current rough position. You are about 920km north west of Kirk and that distance should be maintained and be increased as you move west and it veers to north. I don't think it will get closer to you than 900km unless your engine fails and passengers refuse to row the boat. If you were to stop NOW, then in 36 hours Kirk would be 300km to the east of you. You wouldn't get hurricane force winds but still get some mighty bad weather and waves. But if you don't stop, then in 36 hours you wiol be some 1500km west of Kirk. You'll be safe.

Thanks for the update, Don. I was wondering if you were going to be affected by Hurricane Kirk, and sure enough it's running pretty close to where you are. Have a safe time. Yes, glad to see the Villa Vie Odessey is finally off on its 3 and a half year cruise. The passengers must be delighted it's finally happening. Goes to show even the biggest ships in the world (like the Icon of the Seas) can have issues.

Two things, first, I used to be in the Navy & as far as hurricanes go it’s actually easy to navigate around hurricanes. When we finished our Med cruise we had to get from Rota Spain to Jacksonville NC & there were 7 active hurricanes at the time. The problem mostly comes in when you have to come into port because it’s safer out in the ocean than being docked. Second, one of the first videos they show in Navy basic training is Mooring Line Snapback because it’s just that serious. I’m not sure how cruise lines handle it but there’s supposed to be a tension line attached to every mooring line & when we did our roving duties while on watch we were also supposed to look at the tension lines to make sure there was slack in them. Glad to hear everything went well with no significant issues but I believe someone is in serious trouble over this because this is one of the biggest dangers of running a ship.

Was on Bahamian cruise in 1979 during David. It changed direction so suddenly we had to leave Nassau hours after docking to get back to Miami. Solid black everywhere. Terrifying. They let us off the Emerald Seas in Miami and pushed us off, literally, no customs etc. and then the ship hightailed it to drydock. Interesting trip and it did soak Miami.

I think they knew that they had to pull over...before they departed... if I recall from midlife cruising.... We had to outrun Hurricane Dennis.. back in the day... we left Jamaica and headed to Nassau going around the west coast of Cuba... another cruise ship headed to the same port going on the east coast of Cuba. The night we left Jamaica..we were at the Captains discussion and he discussed the max speed of the ship... can't recall but it was around 21knots.... the next morning we woke up and radar showed the hurricane heading across Cuba... right in our path. I checked the navigation channel... and saw our speed appeared to be faster than our top speed... I commented to my husband..that they must be tossing furniture off the ship to increase our speed. Well we got in front of the storm... When we got to Nassau we ran into people from the other cruise ship.. apparently they had a very rough trip.... vs our quick but relatively smooth sailing. It is always interesting to sail during hurricane season. You just have to be flexible on itinerary and pack nausea meds...just in case :)

We were on a Norwegian ship a few years ago and the Captain took us through the middle of the hurricane. Very cool experience. It did blow out one of the engines and we missed our stop in Miami and co to yes on to Tampa arriving one day early. NCL provided us a hotel room and meal vouchers. All in all it worked out okay. Rather bumpy seas for a few days though.

And now there is another Hurricane Milton that is somewhere near the Yucatan I believe and is curving east headed towards the west coast of Florida and maybe including South Florida. And I just decided to open Cruise Map Tracker and I found the Sun Princess immediately here at 7 pm Saturday evening. That was easy. You're like the only ship besides the NCL Joy that is a little west and above you out there. I put my finger on a ship and it was yours. Maybe I'll bump into you when you arrive at Port Everglades as I am a limo driver down here servicing the cruise industry. All the Best.

You might try the Tube (Metro, Underground, Subway) to Westminster to see the Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, and Big Ben. There’s a nice square in front of Westminster Abbey lined with statues of people like Winston Churchill. If the weather is nice, this is a good visit. If you’re closer to St. Paul’s, walk across the Millenium Bridge to the Southside - visit the Tate Modern and get a tour of the Globe Theater. I did this in 2010 - it made for a nice day and good views.

Curvature of the earth??? NO! That doesn't affect your course. The distorted geometry of the Mercator Projection is the "cause" of curved path on a map , Coriolis Effect is a cause, and the North Atlantic Gyre is a cause, but not Earth's curvature. The Earth's surface is curved but it is curved toward the center of the earth (vertically when on the ocean surface) , so unless the ship is acting like a submarine or an airplane, surface curvature is not changing your path. Somewhere there is an Earth Science teacher in pain.

Say hello to Kirk for me! I can get the bridge cam for your row boat, but the sun is a bit fuzzy. I know the time of image, and by calculating the height of sun over horizon (ocean) one can calculate your latitude. Public AiS has a fix for you at On Oct 3 at 02:43 so I guess I could also average your speed over that period to find your current location and plot it against the NHC predictions. (Pretty sure Princess HQ have done that calculation to advise yoru captain what to do and that you will be able to do this. Kirk is (Friday afternoon) at its peak and starting to lose strenght, but NHC warns that this will create a lot of swells. (the bridge cam currently shows nice calm ocean). Enjoy the roller coaster ride. Suspect you are already west of Kirk's path, but that doesn't mean you won't get rough seas. Enjoy the fun and adventure ! Is this the ship's first trans-atlantic crossing? If so, beware of stray icebergs. Hear of some other ship where Leo diCaprio was a passenger and it also had problems on its first trans-atlantic crossing 🙂
