I started out listening to his comedy albums in the early seventies. I'd seen him on TV, before his HBO specials, and he's funny as hell. Seeing him live, back in the late seventies, was hysterical. It's not so much what he says but the antics as he says them.

Every time George Carlin mentions the new paradigm, "Earth + plastic", makes me think that small numbers of bacteria that can biodegrade oil from the oceans and plastic has started to appear. Population size and efficiency in digestion is too small to make an impact on the amount of plastic around us, but in ten million years there could be large colonies of bacteria that consume plastic, who become source of food for other organisms, who in turn become part of a large echo chain that makes those large accumulations of plastic in the ocean a thriving echo system. Imagine the irony, humans produce so much plastic our way of living is drowned by it, disappear from the planet and a few million years later life on Earth thrives on the reason of our demise. Similar things have happened before. When trees appeared, there were no living things who were capable of processing cellulose, so dead trees started accumulating for hundreds of thousands of years, getting to a point dead trees would petrify (probably you've heard of petrified woods, which are the footprint of cellulose from that period), but with time nature evolved microorganisms and insects like termites that can consume cellulose. Nowadays if you see a dead tree in the woods, it decays in a few years, but originally you could have called it an environmental disaster. From oxygen causing the first mass extinction (cyanobacteria were the original inhabitants of Earth) to planet size disaster from meteorites, life on Earth has adapted with new species, the ones that cannot adapt (and that very well might one day include us) are phased out.

I loved your reaction to Whipping Post. 2 things to recomend, first, George Carlin on Religion and second you absolutely must listen to Steely Dan. I would suggest Kid Charlemagne or AJA (Asia). It will blow your mind. Steely Dan is Walter Becker and Donald Fagan who write the songs play on them and use the cream of the crop of studio musicians to meticulously craft each song to perfection.
