And the reason is simple - the owner usually goes through MOT, changes filters and oils, but does not pay attention to the four-wheel drive, or simply does not know about the need for its maintenance. So in the case of this KIA Sportage - no one serviced or carried out regular maintenance of all-wheel drive units (which we have repeatedly warned about in our videos). The result is in front of you.
In this video, we will consider the most common repair of the KIA / Hyundai all-wheel drive - namely, replacing the half-case of the automatic transmission differential and restoring the splines on the transfer case shaft.
To begin with, a little about the four-wheel drive device.
On the Huyndai KIA crossovers (they cannot be called SUVs, let's be honest), a switchable all-wheel drive is installed without the possibility of forced engagement and without locking the center differential. Simply put - the four-wheel drive is activated when the car starts from a standstill and when the wheels slip. Thus, the all-wheel drive Hyundai and KIA serves only for comfort when driving in conditions of insignificant off-road and overcoming areas inaccessible to sedans with a drive on one axle, in contrast to full-fledged SUVs.
The four-wheel drive is controlled by an electronic control unit through an electro-hydraulic (Haldex clutch) or simply an electric clutch located in front of the rear differential, and the power take-off to the rear axle is performed using a transfer case.
The transfer case is connected to the automatic transmission with a splined connection, and it is this connection that suffers most often, as in our case. The fact is that thrifty Koreans regretted stainless steel when designing and lubricating during assembly - the four-wheel drive shafts rust, corrosion acts as an abrasive and completely "eats" the splines on the transfer case shaft and in the differential half-case.
Repair of the Kia / Hyundai all-wheel drive in case of destruction of the semi-case of the automatic transmission differential consists in restoring the shaft by surfacing and cutting new splines, as well as replacing the semi-differential housing, automatic transmission seals and bevel gear, filter in the automatic transmission (it changes when the box is disassembled).
