That no in Indonesian story reminds me of a time an American got pissed at me for saying the color black in Spanish. Like I get it, that's where the slur cane from... But it's my language I'm not shitting on any race; if I see a black car I call it a black car...

@idkcba yeah it's pretty ironic really because their lack of awareness of other cultures and languages is actually quite racist. It's anglocentrism.

I too was once being called racist for saying nggak, in a discord server I say thats "no" for Indonesian, but they still called me racist But the thing is i know how some sensitive american thinks, so then i say "How dare you force your culture on mine". They then apoligize 😅

As an American it pretty frustrating. Im all for being sensitive and understanding of other people, but here in the US a lot of people have gone so far in that direction that it has actually been pretty detrimental. Like being unable to joke or have honest casual conversations makes having discussions about sensitive topics really hard. Its basically just becomes taboo to talk about certain things.

My dad used to do that, he would raise his hands and make a cat/animal calling sound like “tch tch tch tch tch” to get the waiter’s attention, me and my mom would usually call him out and tell him not to do it because it’s rude, I honestly don’t know where he even learned or get that from. I was born after him and even I know better.
@tiagotiagot

The waiter thing I think really depends both on culture and on the quality of restaurant people are used to. If you usually go to places where waiters don't pay attention or are always busy etc, might make sense to make some noise to call a waiter. Though, there are contexts where some people really are doing that because they are rude...
@jjQlLlLq
2 ай бұрын
This is what I thought. When it's loud & busy and simply calling out by voice wouldn't suffice, I can see why some would snap fingers or clap. But otherwise, I can totally see how it's rude.
@Mel_Bat

Snapping fingers on a waiter feels like some people think of themselves in relation to waiters (and other people working in customer service for the matter) as a lord and a very low ranking servant... At least that's what I've gathered from seeing those people interact or from having to interact with them (the weirder is that it was when I did voluntary work in a local day care when I was 14-15 and people who did that were some of the parents picking up their kids)

I can totally relate to the first story about the no word. I'm Spanish and our word for black was used as a very disrespectful way to refer to black people a lot time ago and nowadays is a totally forbidden word, even worst that the N word for what I known(wich is not much). I've seen americans going nuts when earing or reading the word in videogames for example when whe are just saying something like "There is an enemy on the black building". One guy went totally crazy one time and we didn't understand anything. I've seen even people complaining for some miniature painting brands from Spain like Vallejo or Scale 75 using the word on the paints because they have the name in english and spanish in the label. Is a color, chill. The world doesn't turn around the USA.

I know, in the past, wealthy people would snap their fingers to call their servants over, if they were nearby. So, that might be a vestige of what's left of that. Of course, that doesn't make it not demeaning. Pretty sure the people who still do that in the West don't think of the people they snap their fingers at as people, because they're too prideful of themselves.

Oh god… As an American can we stop this. Like bloody hell… filter word in China is In Chinese, the term nei ge or na ge literally means "that" or "that one," and is widely used in daily speech. It also acts as a filler word during pauses, similar to the English words "um" or "like."

Lots who "snap. etc" to waiters are ones who view them as lesser and there to server them. So they dont feel bad treating them like shit. So not right and viewed by many as wrong, demeaning, etc and makes others view the person doing it badly. But they usually don't care and will just go off on you/etc if comment on the fact they are doing that to a person. Aka they are as mel said, just assholes and will do it no matter what.

who snaps their fingers for the waiter/waitress??? are you guys eating in asmr resturaunts where no one in the entire building is making sounds above a soft whisper? 🤣🤣🤣 you gotta do that "ting ting ting ting" of beating the glass with your silverware i was the kinda person who was much happier just not leaving a tip than trying to make my waiter/waitress do their job though. now if i do eat out at that kinda resturaunt, i bring my own drink & leftover container. so it's like "hm, sat here for 5 minutes while my waiter passed me twice without giving me my check... Bye 😃"

OMG I hate when people snap their fingers for the waiter. Don't snap, don't clap, don't yell. Waiters are people, not dogs. Idk where in the world that would ever be considered polite but if that ever happened to me I would demand an apology from the customer and if they persist in being rude then I'd do my utmost to get them banned from the restaurant. If it means I get fired then so be it, I won't work where I'm supposed to tolerate that anyway.
