I'm acquainted with a gentleman who escaped N Korea about 15 years ago and as crazy as you found N Korea, he found the U.S. even more so. He made his way to china and then from China through a few more countries before he made it to a U.S. consulate and told them he was from N Korea and wanted to defect. Seems he had a lot of knowledge about the military having once served in the N Korean army as an officer so they let him come to the US. He had spent so much time hiding and stealing food that he never actually saw the inside of a grocery store until he got to the U.S. The moment he stepped inside he dropped to his knees and burst into tears. He said there was more food in that grocery store that day than he had seen in his 52 years living in N Korea. He said that he thought there was probably enough food in that grocery store to feed the whole population back home. He could not believe how much food there was and all the other comforts either. He was shocked at all the things we throw away. Next he visited a Walmart then a shopping mall and he couldn't deal with it emotionally so he had to go back to his little cottage where he was staying. He couldn't believe that he was allowed to unplug the TV. In N Korea TV's and radios are on 24/7. You can't turn them off. If you get caught not watching the propaganda programming you can be sent to the concentration camps up north. And when you are sent there they send you and your children and their children and your siblings and their spouses and their children and all your aunts and uncles and first cousins. They all go to the concentration camp with you and there you are worked to death or starved to death and if any of the women happen to get pregnant and the guards never find out resulting in the baby being born in the camp they grow up in the camp and live out their lives in the camp. Your whole family is socially quarantined forever which tends not to be very long because it seems the average life expectancy in one of those camps is around five years. He says you don't ask about the Park family who suddenly disappeared last night from their 20 sq meter apartment. If someone you know all of a sudden isn't there any more you don't ask. People who ask questions also disappear. As for the food, it is very scarce. He informs me that it is not an exaggeration to say they eat grass. They eat grass, flowers when they can find them, leaves, tree bark, insects, worms and anything else. A fish or bird is a rare treat. The government tells you that you should be grateful for the bounty they pretend to give you and you pretend to be grateful for it.

The whole bugged thing in the hotel room is so creepy to me. My uncle used to tell the story of when he was younger he and his college friends somehow ended up in Russia (having just stopped being the USSR), where they were sure the hotel room was bugged. He said that they would stay super quiet, start murmuring gibberish to make the listeners suspicious, then randomly all start screaming right next to the bug. Probably super dangerous but it all gave them a good laugh.

My dad was stationed in South Korea when he was an army ranger. The north and south took turns cleaning the room on the border that both countries met in. My dad was on the cleaning crew. When they entered, they had to form a human chain with their arms to reach the North Korean door and lock it, because they were known for grabbing South Korean/American soldiers

Those poor natives in North Korea live in constant fear and are basically hostages of their own country, their entire lives, that's not something easily understood by most people coming there for a quick visit. So don't be too quick to judge their ways, because they are forced to endure that kind of life style by their own government, which itself is also being run by fear.

+Harvey Hanson I've met someone that was repressed in what I would consider as close to this type of life having terrible trouble with her new found freedom. It took her months to keep her eyes from swiveling around like those glue on googly eyes they have on stuffed animal(you know the ones?) while in her own living room, and she sat like a mafia Don with her back to a corner, head on full swivel :( The poor woman had been kept inside of a cabin in the mountains of Northern California by her incredibly evil and controlling "husband"...whom it was actually unfortunate that she never did technically marry, because she wasn't entitled to half of his property when she escaped after 30 years of captivity. Sadly she never did truly free up her mind and committed suicide after almost 5 years of therapy and living(or existing) in constant fear that he would come to capture her again, even though he was in prison for...uh not kidnapping, dang...I think it was called unlawful imprisonment? He also had died after only a couple of years after she got loose, but she wouldn't believe it. It was the saddest thing I can think of at the moment...well, I guess there is tons of horrible sadness occurring all over the globe as we speak, but she was the most terrified and hopeless person I have ever met. Even telling her about traveling to Europe or Asia would set her off for some reason? I think maybe she was angry at herself for getting ensnared in that time thieving trap, it's was hard to understand and impolite to ask for us kids. She was my buddy's aunt Glennis, and I've never been able to find any stories about her online or even one afternoon of searching the microfiche room at the UC Davis law library. Poor thing is just an undocumented memory and I sadly can't even give her a last name due to my ignorance...RIP Aunt Glennis, thank you for teaching us to enjoy our freedoms to their fullest.

3:29 Those aren’t golf balls. Those are ping pong balls. I’m pretty sure it’s because of the legendary united table tennis match that occurred in 1991 (post Korean War). China for many years has claimed the championship in the World Table Tennis Championships, but to show attempt at peace, both koreas agreed to form a united table tennis team. This competition, as you would expect, was highly anticipated and had a great audience. Their championship over China (who was aiming for their 9th championship in a row) was very emotional and moving for both countries. Many citizens believed the koreas would united soon afterwards. During this competition, the one North Korean and one South Korean world-class players that had teamed up for the table tennis doubles match had created a strong bond which unfortunately ended in their ultimate parting of ways after the competition ended. The movie “As One” really paints a good setting of this period in time.

Agreed. My professor went into North Korea a few years ago and he confirmed the tour guide made it clear what they can bring. He only took pictures of what they allow him. He did said during his train ride he looked outside his window and saw the majority of their citizens were badly tortured, skinny and some had no clothes.
