Do you think you will do a IMAX enhanced Disney+ review/comparison to the original versions? I really feel the new IMAX enhanced version are much better than the OG DoVi streaming versions. Some are claiming they’re literally the same. To me, they just look so much better. Like the resolution is actually better. Which even seems to make colors look better. At least Infinity War does, which is all I’ve had a chance to watch. The bigger size makes specular highlights look brighter too. Just due to the increased size. It’s just overall better!!! and I really hope this IMAX enhanced trend continues. It’s just makes the movies feel more cinematic at home. At least on my little 55” CX. Feels and looks much more like it did, when I saw it in theaters.

Havent LG OLED been made a lot slower in pixel response times these last 4 generations. Look at Rtings test on fx LG C7 55" and look at their waveform testpatterns. 2017 LG 55" C7 pixel response 80% = 0.1ms & 100% = 0.2ms. thats fast. and halleluja for PC or high framerate content but for general low framerate TV content, that is also to fast and can elevate panning stutter. and OLEDs now a days are more like 1100% to 1200% slower with 80% around 1.1ms and 100% around 2.4ms. Here is my 55" OLED under a macro kzitem.info/news/bejne/sayM2H2YiIOTdaQ (notice how only 3 of the 4 WRGB subpixels can be lit at once, not sure if that has been changed on later WOLED panels

@Rev You cannot really make an accurate comparison, since CRTs did not have clear pixels, whereas OLEDs do. CRTs used a shadow mask to project pixels onto the screen, which made the pixels fuzzy-looking. CRT pixels were never crystal sharp, whereas OLED pixels are, as well as the pixels of any other display tech with a fixed pixel grid (LCD, MicroLED).

I know this is an old video, but I would like to say it's a shame it doesn't mention the feel of low framerate (30fps) games. There is much more noticeable judder (I hope that's the right word) than on LED LCD. The effect is shown in the Call of Duty clip, where the OLED picture looks jarring, but it doesn't make clear how it feels during actual gameplay. In fact, I didn't really find any info on this until after I noticed it myself on my new tv and specifically went looking for an answer. I'm playing Horizon Zero Dawn on PS5 at the moment, where performance mode at 60fps is a big graphical downgrade but resolution mode at 30fps feels very choppy. This is on my LG C1 but applicable to OLED as a technology and something that wasn't nearly as bothersome on my 10 year old Sony LED LCD. Thankfully it doesn't bother me in movies, though that might be due to Filmmaker mode. So yeah. OLED seems to be great for games at 60fps or higher, but bad for those running at 30fps. I wonder how Ratchet and Clank fares at 40fps.

I’ve always attributed how jarring 30fps felt in games to me getting more and more used to 60fps games on consoles. However, I also felt like 30fps felt much worse since I got my first OLED TV and now I wonder whether the lower pixel response time of LCDs actually helped to „smooth“ out the 30fps picture since the transitions were still going on while they’re already completed almost instantaneously on an OLED? If so, that’s a very interesting insight I wasn’t aware of - thanks for educating us once again!

The natural progression has been CRT - Plasma - OLED. After CRT, Plasma carried the torch as an emissive display with a fast response time and fantastic black levels. OLED was handed the baton and is also an emissive display with fast response time and infinite black levels. I was exclusively a Plasma supporter and have been watching/supporting OLED since 2008 when Sony launched a 15 inch OLED tv that cost $2500. I’ve been an OLED owner since 2017 (a B7, now have 2 C9’s - it was a crazy deal I couldn't pass up) and couldn’t be happier. Manufacturers can rebrand all they want (LED, SUHD, QLED, etc) but they were always just an LCD. If the LCD on the iPad is anything like on the new Macbook Pro which I suspect it is, Apple aren't using panels in the same league as gaming IPS LCDs when it comes to response times, with rise times 10 times as slow as a typical gaming IPS. It's really not a reasonable comparison if you're expecting the iPad to be representative of LCD tech. The response times are so slow that they're not actually capable of fully displaying their 120hz refresh rate. Mostly fine for content consumption that isn't gaming but it's not exactly showcasing the best of LCD
@KML3rd

Yeah I noticed this also. The 120hz has the fluidity of 120hz but not the motion sharpness. There's a lot of ghosting on the display. A 120hz oled like on a S21 look significantly sharper in motion. Oled is just a better technology. LCD was never a great technology it's only now after decades of refinement that they're decent. *Video sponsored by LG... Even though all the testing is correct and I trust it. The actual end result in "effect" has no real bearing of the outcome. If you suck as a player, 8.2ms advantage is not going to save your @ss, lol. The reaction time of a human being at PROFESSIONAL level is 120-170 milliseconds.. Does anyone think these milliseconds would make a big difference to an average player. Your eyes cannot move or hands react anywhere near that fast. The test difference in input lag with the Nvidia device showed 8.2 millisecond difference. Or 1 frame at 120hz gaming. Playing a competitive game where it matters more what connection you have to the game play server in the form of ping and packet latency/loss. I sincerely doubt that 8milliseconds is going to give you a win or not. Is OLED faster overall. YES, of course. But to try and make it some kind of big difference is a little bit of hyperbole. Meaning I doubt it has a really meaningful effect. I play currently on a Series X because wasn't able to find a 3080 to play on PC (I am a PC player). I play on an old Sony 900E and that at 60fps have 34ms input lag.. I still out perform most people in Battlefield 2042. When playing in 1080p 120Hz mode with 10ms or so input lag on the 900E (The TV itself not total combined like the Nvidia tester shows) with Modern Warfare 2019 I was doing so well I got "shadow banned" because too many players reported me for totally owing their @sses. This still on the old 900E Sony LCD pixel response time likely pretty bad and input lag compared to a nice OLED. The "shadow ban" is not a real ban. It's when they put you on servers to check and see if you're cheating. I was clearly not and put back. This happens to good players all the time in that game. But now that they have a REAL anti-cheat system hopefully instead of temporarily punish good players they can just catch real cheaters and ban them. OLED looks great and perform great, but to try and paint a picture that average players would somehow benefit and "be better" at a game because of a few millisecond difference. It's not going to do anything.. Instead they should more focus on what they think LOOKS better. For that the OLED does look better in many regards. So for me. The actual look of OLED is the best argument. But at the same time, the slight chance of burn in exist and black crush and lower brightness levels. All of which also play a role in gaming. There are countless times an LCD player might win because they are not suffering from black crush and totally missed the enemy in the shadow because of crush.

LCD blasts your retina with blue light, this has been proven tons of times. Besides, my OLED can get plenty bright. 77 inch G1. sorry, but I don't agree. The #1 criteria of a display should be the quality of the image. And no CRT to ever exist could compete with a 4k OLED display. Neither in regard of image sharpness, stability (flickering), colors or contrast. So yes, CRT had and still has its advantages in some "secondary" traits but it sucks in the most relevant trait.

@randomguy8196 The CRTs in the early 2000's were much better than the average CRTs in the 90's. I get more eyestrain from LCD than a CRT it its set to at least 85hz. LCD has inversion artifact, the screen constantly flickers between different colors, you just dont see it because the brain filters it out, but it still causes eyestrain. Its a gamble if you get a good LCD or not, i owned plenty LCDs that gave me horrible eyestrain, much worse than any CRT.

response time is also responsible for all of the "60Hz looks like juddery now that i play at 144HZ". That flash 144Hz gaming display is also a faster response than they were using (even though its not close to OLED) means that a single image occupies much more of the frametime. Good for clarity, but it can be jarring as it's like watching a slideshow with "snap" transitions vs one with "fade" transitions. 60Hz on a basic TV or basic monitor feels smooth enough because the transitions ARE smoother, but it's essentially running a static motion blur

@paulcox2447
2 жыл бұрын
While l this is great for speed,.One thing to keep in mind is that this incredibly fast pixel response time leads to a lot of judder. Ig wasthe one thing I was not prepared for going to my C1 and then unless I'm playing a first person shooter or something where I need ultra fast response time I'd rather just game outside of game mode activated because any game where the camera spins a lot it is very very real. (The opening to saints row IV if anyone owns. Or any platform 3rd person with a camera that needs to be moved often If anything I can consider this a "weakness" when it comes to picture quality unfortunately because of the way our brains interpret it. It makes judder. Same with movies. Unless You wanted to look like the cammer man has Parkinson's every time there is a panning shot you need to use dejudder. ( 8/10 is best setting for anyone reading who isn't using it.) There are tools there to improve it but people have to be aware enough to use it.

I have 3 oled TVs, C6/B7/CX ranging from 55” - 77”. The technology has improved so much that burn in really isn’t an issue if proper precautions are taken. I have also gamed on all 3 TVs for long periods of time along with streaming app menus constantly on screen. I will say, I’m purchasing a QN85 exclusively for gaming. Why? Peace of mind and not having to take so many precautions. I know the Qn85 will be abused and picture quality is pretty good. Input delay is also phenomenal and as a competitive gamer that’s all that matters. Today’s technology is so good that there really is no need to bash one over the other. Prices are also affordable to where you can have a tv to fit every need.

Panasonic don’t make FALD sets anymore since the DX so your best bet is Sony or Samsung if you want to stick with LED LCD though Sony are more accurate out of the box but use minimal dimming zones though they still have a fantastic local dimming algorithm. I sometimes think about upgrading too but like you I’m not sold on OLED, I prefer the peak brightness my DX can produce especially in HDR and no worry of burn in. Possibly the X90j for 55” though it won’t have the colour accuracy or peak brightness of the DX if that’s what you’re looking for. Good luck!. 👍🏻

Great video and the topic of pixel response time is quite interesting. I feel stutter is still a huge problem in OLEDs. Where fast pixel response time has huge benefits in gaming and other high framerate content (reduced motion smearing, input lag) it does however have the opposite effect in low framerate content such as films. I've owned several and had to return all of them because the OLED stutter gave me migraine, nausea, vertigo and headaches. Currently own the Sony XG95 and it doesn't give me any symptoms. I believe this is due to the slower pixel response time and the naturally added motion smoothing between frames when watching slow framerate content (such as films). In CRTs stutter vs. motion smearing was adjusted with the decay time of phosphorus. In LEDs the slow transition between different colors has a similar smoothing effect. OLEDs have nothing. In theory the fix for stutter is of course motion compensated frame interpolation. Inserting more frames is a solution but balancing the fine line of stutter vs. SOE without losing the film like motion quality is a very difficult task. Would love to hear Vincents comments on this.

That slow mo capture is a great demonstration of the OLED stutter effect as well. The LCD smearing the content often feels more natural to most people rather than the slide show like stutter. Definitely better at 120hz I'm sure. It'd be interesting to get some pro gamers to test them side by side. Honestly the smoother smearing might actually feel more natural and easier for aim based games than OLEDs instant frame by frame. It's like built in motion smoothing even if slightly slower. Our brains might predict the directions etc better. Would be a fascinating experiment. Also keep in mind that I believe on a VA panel coming out of black will be the slowest response time. This is why the most thorough gaming monitor reviews will measure the response time coming in and out of a variety of shades, where on VA black will always be the worst (a reason that IPS or TFT is the choice of pro gamers in some cases) but it's not the whole story.

Amazing video! Very informative. It also came just at the right time! I had a commenter on one of my videos, claiming his old Phillips LCD had better/cleaner/clearer motion than his CX does. That threw me thru a loop. I know he’s struggling with the stutter tho. He was used to the stutter being masked by the blur and slower pixel response of the LCD’s. So I think their might be an argument to be made for people who notice stuttering, over ghosting/smearing. Some people just don’t see that stuff. They just are drawn to the stutter. I’m however, the opposite. I guess due to my knowledge, and dislike for MCFI/SOE. I see basically everything, unfortunately. But I also don’t really notice the stuttering anymore, bc I’m so used to it. And understand why it’s there. (Can’t stand MCFI/SOE) However, I do noticed the ghosting/inverse ghosting, VA black smearing, and just overall soft/blurry looking motion on LCD. It used to make me dizzy while gaming. Not anymore on OLED. I also understand that we’re on sample and hold display tech, and frame cadence is a thing. So there is going to be some stutter. And the lower the frame rate, the more obvious the stutter is. BFI is promising, to help mask the persistent blur. Unfortunately, the trade offs, are always too great for me. The best BFI implementation I’ve seen on an OLED, was Sony’s. It had the least amount of brightness reduction, and improved motion resolution a good bit. I can’t use BFI on my CX, due to black crush, loss of brightness, and a weird gamma shift, especially if using the “Auto” mode. But man, does it produce some of the best motion I’ve seen, if you can get over the trade offs.

OLED has black smearing as well, but it's mostly only noticeable when used in VR headsets. I like BFI on my CX for some SDR gaming. I'm not quite as concerned about the image quality as I am when watching movies. The brightness loss means it doesn't work for everything, though.

So I get that it is noticeable using slow motion and special devices but how much difference does that actually make to the human eye? Can we even notice drastic differences at 10 milliseconds?
