That side-step thing won't work. However, the walking backward uphill *does* work! It's a LOT easier to _push_ a weight (your body weight) uphill than it is to _pull_ a weight uphill. When you walk backwards uphill your legs and butt are pushing your weight uphill, but when you walk forward your legs and butt are pulling your weight uphill. I figured it out on Alcatraz, believe it or not. It's about a half-mile, all of it up a STEEP hill, from the dock where you disembark to the top of the island where the prison sits. After the first switchback I turned around to see how far my Mom and step-Dad were behind us and realized how much easier it was to go backwards uphill. It was purely an accident, but I walked the rest of the way uphill backwards. The next day I didn't have the ridiculously, _cripplingly_ sore butt and front of my thighs that I had always had before when hiking up steep hills all day.

I don't think it will last long in London. Since the introduction of Universal Credit due to welfare reforms it will be a shoplifters paradise. Since the welfare reform more stores are finding people are shoplifting to be able to feed themselves and their families because they don't have the money to pay for it. Cashierless stores will have more shoplifters, especially supermarkets. Sure the stores may save money on hiring less people but the losses from theft would be more than it would cost to hire security guards and actual staff on tills.
