In the 1970s up to the early 1980s the BBC video recording staff would put together a Christmas tape that was just for internal use. It had things like presenters swearing on camera when they get something wrong. At the time it was common if someone made a mistake for them to say "Merry Christmas VT" as they knew that there was a good chance of them ending up on the VT Christmas Tape. I think that the tapes were banned in the early 1980s.

Something to remember about the early cartoons is that they were seen in theaters only, television wasn't really popular until after WW2 and wasn't common in every household until the 1950's, cartoons usually played before the movie so more adults most likely watched more cartoons than kids, hence the mature nature.
@mewregaurdhissyfit7733

And once cartoons made it to TV for "childrens entertainment", it was the SAME cartoonists at the big studios that were creating these cartoons for kids. They put tons of adult gags in them and slipped in multitudes of adult innuendo.

A lot of early cartoons were meant for adults or at least mature audiences. It wasn’t until later cartoons began to be marketed to children only, but the old stuff remains. Even some of the Bugs Bunny stuff was not meant for children hence some of the jokes, but as standards changed and they began being treated as children cartoons. Yes, Donald Duck was watching porn in the one. And another he was manufacturing ammunition for the Nazis- that one was an anti-German war propaganda Disney cartoon- Disney would prefer people forget it exists. Disney wasn’t the only companies to do war propaganda- it was normal at the time- but now it is seen as embarrassing.

So the bit with Daffy taking off his feathers and the lizard shedding her skin we’re both rotoscoped. Rotoscoping is where you film something live and then draw over the film. At 1:32 its not so much the "oh daddy" as it is the way the wolfs body suddenly goes from limp to erect in such a particular manner it could only be referring to the male anatomy. He even goes completely sideways to make the comparison more visually obvious. This gag happens a lot in old cartoons and it always went over my head until one day I realized there's only one thing that goes from limp to stiff when excited by something and that's a pretty crazy reference for a children's cartoon.

It's funny how people think "just show the kid a cartoon and it;ll, shut'em up". Bugs Bunny and so many of these cartoons were made for the "boys" overseas during wartime. This stuff was recycled and played for children - "the gift that keeps giving" (from the TV network's standpoint). It cost no additional money or resources to produce, so you just stick it in a children's' slot for free. Therefore, I grew up with this stuff.

Compared to the total number of cartoons, the WWII cartoons are a very small minority, and the majority of the ones created for the military did not make it onto the kids shows of the 1950s. There are cartoons from the major studios, made for the home front during WWII. These cartoons made it onto 1950s television. Most were retired from television as they were replaced by newer cartoons. By the 1960s, a large number of the cartoons were nothing but advertisements for toys.

Fun fact, Looney Tunes and the original disney shows were never meant for children. They were originally American propaganda made for soldiers during WWII. Which is why we have episodes like the one where Donald Duck works as a bomb tester for the Nazi regime. This trend continued into the 60's. Did you know there is an episode where Micky Mouse is conscripted into the Vietnam war and dies?
@memyname1771
2 жыл бұрын
Where is the fun fact? Looney Tunes and Disney cartoons came out with cartoons for kids well before WWII. They were not originally propaganda. A small number, compared to the total number of cartoons, were created as military training material. The Donald Duck cartoon, made for the home front, features Donald having a nightmare about living in Naziland and working in a Nazi munitions plant. His job is to screw the fuse to the nose of munitions. During the cartoon, the song "Der Fuehrer's Face" plays as Donald is overworked. In the end, he wakes to find himself in America. Considering when Der Fuehrer's Face was released, it was well past the time when this cartoon could be considered propaganda in America. It was little more than a feel good cartoon that insulted the leader of the axis powers that we were fighting. The "Mickey Mouse" cartoon you refer to was not made by Disney or Disney studios. It was made by people to protest the war in Vietnam, it was never shown on television or in theaters.
