I see a lot of people complaining about the absence of legacy horror here--basically 70s or 80s. And I honestly think their ranking lower on the list truly has to do with audience savvy (not smartness, but canniness when it comes to storytelling devices). Those movies are great (if you're into that type of thing-like me), but they won't generate heart meter spikes in a modern audience because of they were made in an earlier era of cinema. The look of them, the pacing, the storytelling, the expectations of acting and character decisions, they've all evolved. So the "dated-ness" of those movies keeps them from being scary to a modern audience. I've seen a ton of them at repetory screenings with large audiences and they generate more laughs than I'd like. It's annoying. But that's why I think they don't register too highly now on people wearing heart monitors. They're more like a lovely nostalgia-bath than a rollercoaster.
@zxbc1
2 жыл бұрын
The whole metric of measuring heart beat rate is totally flawed. For one, the triggering of fight-or-flight in jump scares is what's "powering" these high measures of heart rate. In a sense you could say it still measures the "scariest" movies - as in, it literally scares you into a physical response using cheap tricks. But horror genre has never been about the goal to raise your heart rate, it's always a lot more than that. Classic horror pictures have the sensibility to convey actual terror. Like Stephen King once said, "I’ll try to terrify you first, and if that doesn’t work, I’ll horrify you, and if I can’t make it there, I’ll try to gross you out. I’m not proud." Classic films genuinely work hard to terrify you; and only if that doesn't work, they fall back to horrifying you; and if all fails, they will gross you out too. Whereas, modern films simply try to gross you out at every opportunity, just to get a cheap response and make you think you got your money's worth. Consider a film like The Exorcist, or the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. If you take out the few jump scares (and they really are few and sparse), you're still left with a great sense of dread throughout the movie, and they are still actually great narrative films. You can't say that about most modern horror films.
@cardinalStiefel
2 жыл бұрын
Modern horror movies are usually less scary than classic horror movies, they rely too much on cheap jump scares with loud music and fast images. This is why heart rate monitors have high measures. If you remove the jump scares, modern horrors are usually pretty vanilla.

Both these movies were bad and not scary lol
@denglish5275
2 жыл бұрын
@@si_quest I agree that the babadook wasn't scary but to call it bad just makes me sympathetic for you. The way the story builds up as the stages of grief. Leaving us mostly in the dark and giving the audience clues as the mother turns from this sympathetic role of a mother to a troublesome son to a person that is not handling the death of her husband well. The narrative switch from the mothers perspective to a more third person perspective in the third act to truly pull you away from that sympathetic position as a viewer and now understand that the babadook is not an outside entity. He is not something you can get rid of. He is instead something you have to accept. The ending being possibly the best artistic expression of what it means to lose someone in your life. This true acceptance that this demon will never leave and you have to feed it from time to time to keep it satiatied because grief is not just an event it becomes a part of your life. And finally the final words to the kid. The conept that he too will eventually have to face those demons when he is older and has more of an understanding of all of it. Scary movies are good for a multitude of reasons. Sometimes they are just for adrenaline and give you jumpscares, as in sinister. Sometimes they build an interesting world off of a cool concept, as in John carpenter films. But, imo, the best scary movies are allegories for something horrifying in real life, as in hereditary, get out, it follows, and the babadook. The horror of these movies lies in the true to form story. As someone that has felt great grief watching the babadook is an experience because it reminds me of my grief. And reminds me that its time to feed him as well.

@@formaldehyde3864 Sensible decision. The thing about Blair Witch Project is, that it builds on ancient fears we all have to some extent: the woods at night. Of course we are afraid of dark forrests, because, in ye olden days, the nights have literally been dark and full of terrors. This fear basically has been hard-coded into our brains by evolution. What makes it scary is of course first the setup and it's about conspiracy. It's shot as a in a lost tape, adding realism to it, and on top of that, a lot of it was improvised by the actors due to the nature of how it was directed-putting actors in a dark forrest and play with their minds. It get's really close to feel like a found tape, probably the closest. I was once at a horror movie marathon at a cinema, and I think the amount of my fear was just a function of time. As in, the more emotionally exhausted I became, the scarier they were. The first one, Descent 2, wasn't scary at all, maybe because a girl was cowering into my shoulder so I felt like a boss. Then Nightmare at Elmstreet, the new one, was pretty scary. Then no.3, which I don't remember the name, was the most terrifying thing I ever saw, even though most people said it was the worst one. Then The Fourth Kind wasn't as bad, maybe because I like aliens, or maybe because I fell asleep partway through and I got some of my emotional stamina back.

Hi, this still makes me smile and laugh 30 years later. I lived in a shared single storey building with a group of lads. We had a session of watching horror films over a weekend culminating in hell raiser. Richard a good friend of mine fell asleep while the rest of us watched the film and the next day we wound him up about him chickening out and how scary the film was. In the end we went out for a drink and he decided to stay and watch the film. We snuck back about an hour later and witnessed him sat watching the film clutching a baseball bat. I climbed on the roof over the door and we proceeded to scratch gently on the window until he freaked out and came running outdoors ready to start swinging. Of course everybody had hidden and as he stood just outside the panting heavily holding the bat white knuckled I reached down and scratched the top of his head gently. I have never heard anybody make a noise like he did, a sort of scream combined with a choking moan. He collapsed to the floor in a fetal position and I almost fell off the roof because I couldn’t stop laughing. It took him about 5 minutes to uncurl and he proceeded to chase the other housemates with bat. I didn’t come down from the roof for ages as I was convinced he was going to brain me. Not that I could blame him, to this day I can’t think about this without getting a sh*treating grin and chuckling.

This reminds me... When I was 16, my boyfriend's older brother (who is Absolutely terrified of spiders, to the point where he was evicted from Several places when living in Florida because he would shoot literal Bullets at the giant spiders they have there, whilst in his bed) anyway... he came home while we were watching Arachnophobia & while he was standing there, trying to convince us he wasn't afraid of spiders anymore cuz he'd grown up enough, my boyfriend very purposefully & lightly tickled his arm and dude screamed AND pissed his pants. As a 20-something year old. 😂 I felt so bad and was laughing at the same time, it was hilarious. Ahhhhhh, the good old days....

I went out and bought _Hereditary_ and _Midsommar_ straight away after seeing them. I like movies that aren't bloody necessarily, rather, they fill you with a sense of dread. Those two were eerily perfect in that genre. I think they were the first in a long time. The last time I felt that emotional sensation was _Rosemary's Baby_ . And that was a film made back in the 60s.

I think people confuse being afraid of jump scares with being afraid of horror movies. I don’t like being surprised and they always draw out the silence to be as long as possible to give people the most anxiety. I just don't get scared by horror movies really, but omg Netflix's Spook in the Hill's House series scared the crap out of me. I was genuinely wondering through my room and was scared of ghosts coming out of every corner for more than two full days! It was so freaking good! Nevertheless such a pity that they have completely missed the mark for the ending. The story just didn't come together. My greatest disappointment yet since I was born and screamed from excitement! On the other hand Atomic Blonde was the most disgusting movie I have ever seen in the cinema yet. Repeatedly hitting an already dead body for more than 5 minutes and hitting a different guy on his head while he is laying completely helpless while for more than 10 minutes until he faints and dies. This was so discusting, off-putting, thick in a very bad way... I can not find words to describe how bad this thriller movie was even with my love for gory horror movies. It felt genuinly like watching someone murdering people live! In the end I just got from my sit with my friend and got out from the cinema hall in the middle of this thick scene. Never did it before.

As a huge horror fan here is my list for the actual top 5 scariest movies of all time: 1. The Exorcist 2. Hereditary 3. Funny Games 4. Lake Mungo 5. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre I don't think jump scares or heart rate really indicate whether or not a movie is truly scary, because movies can just easily exploit brain chemistry with loud sound mixed with quick movement over and over again and it works every time even if it's not actually scary. The movies I've listed have little to no jump scares and are scary solely based on their premises, tone/atmosphere, writing/story, and shots. Not that jump scares can't be done well, but they're literally the cheapest way to get fear out of someone.

Hereditary was actually just supposed to be a straight drama, but Ari couldn't sell it, so he rewrote it to be a horror, because genre films are easier to fund, because theyre easier to market. So at its core it really is about that generational family trauma, which makes it so effective. Toni and Alex's performances were absolutely amazing.

It's interesting that you miss the movies having jokes. Personally, I actually feel pretty sick of almost all movies containing jokes. I feel like it often contradicts the mood of the movie and mostly just reminds you that you're watching a movie because they just had to push some one liners in there.
@monstormaniac
2 жыл бұрын
Honestly I feel the opposite. I know what you're talking about contradicting tone, but often times when I watch a movie and there's down time, jokes make the scary moments scarier. I also like that I can relate to people because I think most humans aren't serious sandys all the time. sometimes we like to laugh and joke, even to lighten a tense situation. It helps me feel like the characters are like me and then I can picture myself in that situation and be more frightened or whatever the tone of the film.
