World Trade Center Responder EMT Marty N. and Survivor Stephen K. share their personal stories of September 11th in their 9/11 Tribute Museum presentation of We Were There on stage at the National September 11th Memorial Museum.
Marty was an EMT and contributed to the rescue effort on 9/11. He arrived at Ground Zero on the afternoon of 9/11 and was there for 4 days. His department specialized in hazardous material and confined space rescue, so he and his colleagues were assigned to attempt rescue and recoveries, as well as dig through debris. Marty’s story touches on the horrors he saw and experienced at Ground Zero, as well as the emotional and mental toll that it took on him in the years after.
Stephen worked on the 62nd floor of the North Tower for the Port Authority. On the morning of 9/11, after the plane struck, he cleared his office of 9 and they all made it safely down to the plaza. From there, he went to the Port Authority Headquarters, one floor beneath the plaza, where he got stuck when the South Tower collapsed. He made his second escape of the morning, and eventually found himself 6 blocks north of the WTC when the North Tower collapsed. He speaks of the loss of human life and his home away from home, as well as the incredible luck that he and his colleagues experienced that day.
