Cracking stuff Les. I was 14 yrs. old when the EE. type 3's came into service and took over some of the fish trains after I had started work on Grimsby fish market in late 1962. Amazing to find they are still at work when I am well into my 70's.!

Great video Les, the 56 sounded superb pulling away with those new box wagons. Were they loaded with spent ballast from the Carstairs remodelling scheme ? I have to give you top marks for persevering all day when the weather was that bad. Thumbs up and take care. 👍
@LeslieGilpinRailways

Thanks Colin. No, the 56 was hauling ballast from Ravenstruther Quarry, near Carstairs. Often Ravenstruther supplies Carlisle YArd for onward use but at the moment Colas is taking the ballast via Carlisle Yard to Longport.

Why are loco wipers always a bit rubbish, even on the newer machines? They stutter back and forward as if they had just been taken off a 1930s Morris.
@LeslieGilpinRailways

ITs certainly the case on the old locos but the modern EMUs seem to be quite efficient if noisy
@hoffwell

We have some 66?'s that either go extremely slow or so fast they look as though they will fly off! Never a happy medium 🤣. And the noise some make can even be heard over the engine in notch 8! All air operated which is probably why they are soo poor .

Wow, a bit of drama. It's dedication enough to be out there in such wet conditions, but the flooding warnings and re-directions... ooh, what a nightmare. I would have to look up and see how long a diversion to Glasgow to get to Edinburgh would take. Not the quickest way home. Nice mix of trains again, Leslie! Hopefully you stayed dry inside your jacket and such!
@LeslieGilpinRailways
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Anthony. Usually they send Edinburgh passengers via Newcastle. I suspect someone at Avanti or TPE thought they were being clever trying the Glasgow Route, even though it means a trip down onto the Glasgow underground. One advantage of the station is the roof and canopies so I largely stay dry!

Hi Les The 56 on those "Land Recovery" boxes seems unusual, not seen those on your videos before, interesting and 66434 with those few old SPA's and an OBA, really interesting (for me anyway, its good for seeing how weathered they are, lol). I suppose with the flooding TPE have a genuine excuse for stopping trains short for once, as opposed to stopping them at any other time, the logs always seem to get through though! Take care out there, thanks

Thanks Peter. It must have been last year since Colas used 56s on Carlisle Yard to Longport aggregate trains. I did film them then. The wagons are rather smart. I wonder how much they paid Carlsberg to use their logo and catch phrase. I was please with the old wagons.

Another good one Les, hectic day at Carlisle. Has Carlisle ever had an express route through the station or has it always been a mass of track and points?.
@LeslieGilpinRailways
Жыл бұрын
Thanks!. Carlisle has always been an exchange point whether between companies up to 100 years ago, or for changing locos or as a junction. There were separate goods lines away from the station until 1984 but they weren't by any means meant as a through route.
