Hi Tomas & Geo5 team. Thanks for this great presentation. When should we use "contacts" for structures and when we should not? Thanks.

Hi Hamed, sorry, it took us a little bit longer to answer, but here it is: Generally, contacts should be used on interfaces between two materials where relative slippage or disconnection can be expected. A typical example would be a cantilever retaining wall. Contacts are also useful in situations where one wants to display the normal and tangential tractions on an interface. This can be done even if you do not use contacts in your model. You just add yet another calculation stage and define the contacts (with arbitrary stiffness) in it. Because you did not define any new loading all results will be identical to the previous stage but the tractions will be displayed. This approach is sometimes used to display tractions acting on a tunnel lining. Let us invite you to the new webinar GEO5 FEM: Material Models on 30th/March/2022, register here zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_xsxombQCQy6yMW8j41z8Pg or after the webinar date you find the recording on our website - among other video tutorials at www.finesoftware.eu/video-tutorials/. Best regards :)
