Under the leadership of Dr. Ellen Hines, San Francisco State University, Dr. Maritza Sepúlveda, Universidad de Valparaíso, and Dr. Carlos Montenegro Silva, Instituto de Fomento Pesquero, we are funding a collaborative project in Chile to assess the risk of marine mammal bycatch in fisheries along its coast. In this project, an expert team of scientists and managers from universities and the Chilean government are using the Bycatch Risk Assessment (ByRA) Toolkit to identify areas with bycatch risk and prioritize future data collection; and\develop mitigation strategies to decrease bycatch mortality.
Their work is supporting Chile’s efforts to better understand marine mammal abundance and bycatch occurrence and to comply with the MMPA Import Provisions. Join us for a webinar on March 24 featuring members of the Working Group discussing the project and sharing preliminary results.
