I don't think there was anything accidental about it, Norm always went for the funny. What separates Norm's comedic genius was that he spent his career making it seem like he was a "simple guy" who was unintentionally/accidentally funny, with the slow cadence in his voice, constantly downplaying his intelligence, and feigned naivety. All while possessing this endlessly deep pool of philosophical, literary, and historical knowledge that he'd dip into occasionally just to surprise us. If the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist, then the greatest joke Norm ever made was convincing us that he wasn't always the smartest person in the room.

@@forbes646 There are a lot of things one could say about Norm, but personally I think what made him so great was how relentlessly dedicated he was to what HE found funny. He would never compromise for an audiences sake - he'd seriously just simply say what he thought was funny. 95% of the time it just WAS funny because he was so naturally funny, and the other 5% of the time he'd either tell a joke that was either so kitschy, quaint, or tasteless that the humour comes less from the actual joke itself and moreso from you going "Did that guy really just say that?" - but because he's so good at delivering said jokes, you're laughing *with* him instead of *at* him anyway. Or sometimes one of his jokes would just bomb and he'd still manage to be fucking hilarious anyway. I imagine some people may see him differently (hell, I imagine some other fans may strongly disagree with my portrayal of him in the above paragraph) but he was honestly kind of a paradox, comedically. He was the most conventional stand-up you'd ever seen, while at the same time being the least conventional stand-up you'd ever seen. He could do an entire comedy set without getting barely any laughs and yet it would probably still be one of the funniest sets you'd ever seen in your life. I dunno, I've written too much already - just look up the "12 Minute Joke" on this site if you haven't already. He was just so effortlessly funny.

To the SNL social media communications professionals who are responsible for KZitem content: Based on what I’m seeing across media platforms and channels, it’s possible that Norm McDonald is at this very moment, more popular than when he held down the Update desk. Which would make sense because so much of his humor was just simply ahead of the times. My point is, you are no doubt sitting on a gold mine of Norm material that will never be more appreciated than it will right now. Feed the interns all night if you have to and release large amounts of clip shows as soon as you possibly can, although as the professionals, I trust that you’re way ahead of me, provided that there aren’t legal reasons for not beefing up your KZitem channel by honoring the legacy of a true original that SNL can proudly say it introduced to the world. What’re you still reading this comment for? You’ve got clips to string together! And don’t care if they’re relevant or if people will get it. We didn’t get it most of the time back then either, but that won’t keep us from appreciating the laidback, yet savage humor that was the goofy genius of NM. 🙏
