I'm really glad that you enjoyed Tom Lake. Your description captures well the subtlety of the structure and character development.

I'm so glad you enjoyed Tom Lake. It really is a beautiful and subtle work. I've only read one other book by Patchett and I can't wait to catch up. Anne Lamott went to the same high school as me and came back to speak when I was a student, but it was after school hours and I was not about to spend more time in school to hear her speak. 😂

Aha, no way! And that’s hilarious! I love those little moments where your adult self looks back and wonders why! 😂

Thanks, Bob!🌷I loved Tom Lake too. I listened to Meryl Street narrating the audiobook and watched Our Town on youtube with Paul Newman playing the role of the stage manager. It all combined so well in bringing the characters in Tom Lake to life. A novel about radicalisation I’ve found rather impressive is Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie. The experience of the young man in that book will stay with me for a long time. I somehow feel I’m not ready to face Toni Morrison’s novels yet. Thanks for mentioning her essay collection, as it may become a first step towords her fiction.

I finally read Tom Lake a couple of weeks ago and you describe its strengths beautifully. I got the ebook of Bellies the other day but not sure when I'll get to it as July is packed. You have encouraged me though.

I absolutely hated Tom Lake , l love Anne Patchett usually but this one was so boring : it was so nice of you to pick up the pleasant nuances but it was not enough for me. I actually loved Bird by Bird ; l have read and reread it, l think one if the best books on writing; up there with Stephen Kings !! Yet am intrigued to read Mouth full of Blood as l loved Hilary Mantels memoir. Great reviews cheers Leonie

Aha, totally fair! I adored her memoir and The Dutch House, which I preferred to Tom Lake. And yes! Bird by Bird has such a charm to it!

You’ve had a haircut and you got your mojo back? Is there a connection? How good looking was this barber?
