All I can say is i'm really glad Ric Ocasek produced the blue album. I really think he was an integral part of refining weezer's arrangement skills and establishing a signature sound for the band's future.

I do wish his later projects with Weezer were as consistent, since my major complaint of EWBAITE is that it sounds overly compressed for the sake of sounding loud and noisy when Blue sounds plenty heavy and noisy while still sounding wide and giving room for everything to breathe

It's kinda crazy how many musical genres and bands early Weezer successfully took inspiration from and use those ingredients to create something new.

this feels so sad but cool at the same time. maybe it’s the nostalgia, their songs sound so different.

sounds more like a Kurt Cobain solo track, the way the vocals are pitched-up & distorted, Kurt would make similar effects for his voice on demos

Chasm lyrics: Far away hangs a red light Far away, yet close enough to see Blinking on and off, brings me closer to the edge The earth is rolling underneath my feet Swallow me As I swallow you Carry me Jump into the river Yeah One more time for good measure Once again for the pleasure And thank you, mama, for the food I'm about to eat And thank you for the hours I have laid with you C'mon Swallow me As I swallow you Carry me Jump into the river Yeah

Really incredible how most of their greatest material was written in those earliest formative years, makes you wonder if its in the fate of the artist to be judged by the choices they make, by whom they make them for. If that record label company never accepted them, what would have been? Would rivers continue writing honest songs about his life and pain, happily with the original cast? Its fun to dream, but I don't want to get lost now. I am happy that I get to even hear these and appreciate them for what they are. Thank you and all of the people in the Weezer community who keep compiling and finding these! I've got years worth of music to enjoy thanks to you guys.

Rivers had a breakdown from the fame of his their first record. The Blue Album and Pinkerton were Weezer's creative peak. They've written some solid records since then, but most would agree they are living in the shadows of their early creative and critical acclaim. That being said, even their weaker albums are still competently written and produced pop songs.
