I went to an outdoor Trace Adkins concert near my home last summer and was lucky to be standing at the very front, directly in front of Trace, with my feet straddled over the power cords to the stage lol. Then we got a storm with a good long rain - and I thought oh crap there goes my hair, gonna ruin the concert and probably cause the show to stop. BUT INSTEAD, they kept performing as Trace just stepped around the small showers coming through the roof and said he'd keep going as long as it was safe. I ended up putting away the rain coat and just let it rain on me and it felt sooo good. My hair, which is about 3 feet long, got all fuzzy and curly, my clothes were wet, we cooled off, and the best thing of all, Trace said "Ya all know what my favorite color on a woman is? Wet!!"

Hi all, crane operator here, yes the readings in the crane are not exact (even when calibrated) however they are still relatively accurate. Next time do a test lift with the crane on a known weight, like a container with 1000L of water will weigh pretty close to 1t (excluding the weight of the container and this is a good enough approximation), or if you have a car near the crane that has a manufacturer ls weight available online then weigh it. This will give you a baseline. There may be an inaccuracy in the ballpark of 100kg (I'm guessing because every machine is different) but it's not like you should be getting tonnes in inaccuracy. If cranes are out in their scale reading by ridiculous amounts, like tonnes, then cranes can fall over when lifting a load.
@villanuevacharold251
16 күн бұрын
Thank you for your positive comment sir... Actually I'm the crane operator who performed that lift and that's what I meant to say that tha crane is not so accurate but it's only about a kilo gram difference... The only problem is we did so many atemps that's why the reading of the crane changes but the tons didn't change only kilograms are missing 😁
@ricktaylor4real

@@villanuevacharold251Good on you to be following AND commenting on this! To me, that shows some dedication and pride in your work, well done man… well done. It seems to me that, like an automobile, the manufacturer SHOULD have a very close weight, at least within an acceptable margin of error, for every model they build. It would not be difficult to then add and deduct weights for whatever customization a unit had. So the base weight is 11.3 tonnes, customer selections deducted 600 kilos from the base, but added back on 1100 kilos in optional items. Boom… there is your weight, within a 100 kilos at most. I don’t understand why Rapido would not have had an accurate enough figure to work with, one that WOULD have be verifiable by this weighing that you did with your crane. Unless things are whacky as hell, your number vs their number SHOULD have been close enough for a good reading. But… I’m guessing no⁉️ Either way, good on you to be in the comments and willing to engage, hopefully you don’t get flamed by the 1000 professional crane operators that will suddenly appear with their decades of knowledge and experience and that “internet social warrior insane desire” to argue with everyone!! 😅😂😜

So.... I'm one of those aerospace guys you don't like however I only mentioned repair schemes and some structural repairs not being allowed in aviation and automotive situations but what would my training and licencing qualify me to say? Also when it comes to lifting aircraft there is a procedure to follow to avoid exactly what happened to you in this instance. If Rapido don't have something this simple and necessary available to you perhaps you should listen to me and send the POS back to them as many people suggested previously! Oh and weight is critical with these types of things so again you and Rapido should have this on file too. Rapido are coming off as half arsed in what they do and while there is some difference between carbon aircraft and boats safety standards must be meet as lives are at stake in both aspects, your boat can hold more people than some light aircraft!
@corystenger5570

Crane operator in the states here. Next crane company you hire to lift the boat ask them if they have a load cell. The computers on crane are generally with in a few thousand pounds. This also makes a difference on what you are lifting and how far away from the crane it is. Hinse ask for the load cell witch will give and an accurate weight. The load cell will connect to the hook block on crane and have a remote witch you can read on ground as the load comes up. Also take pictures of how othe companies rig your boat so that future companies will spend less time guessing how to do it. Very hard to lift something like that without a center of gravity mark, your basically guessing the whole time.

Why they were saying carbon can't be repaired is the Composite is strong by its strands enclosed in epoxy. When you break the strands its like breaking out rebar out of a bridge set in tension. The solution is pack it with epoxy and sister the outside of the break with enough layers to equal or exceed the strength break point. On the other hand you haven't documented the repair for use to make an armchair assessment.But going by what it appears to have been done its superficially repaired but it would likely not be stronger unless you or Rapido calculated how many layers would be necessary to better the failure or cut out the entire section and relayup the form. Unless you got an engineers signoff to certify the repair its hard to have the same confidence in the repair. When(if) it breaks again take it back to Rapido with a lawyer for them to make it right. Loved the video, you guys are still the best, can't wait to see you in Japan.
@skylinedroneservices

@@sector7offshore pretty well nailed it, carbon fibre requires both mechanical and chemical (epoxy) bonding. Once the epoxy is dried and you try to add to it you are only adding a mechanical bond from any sanding. The chemical bond is pretty well non existent

They seem like they are purposefully ignoring experts in all the comments. They either are using the break for videos or are going to continue to get scammed by this company.
@petersgrayson
15 күн бұрын
I agree with these comments, I believe if you don't want to sister the joint, you need to grind the area back, the typical scarf ratios are like 12 to 1 I think, but that might be either side, not sure if you can only get to one side the scarf ratio is larger or not. There are different standards, some large to small glass patches, some the other way, but the most important is the surface prep, keyed and clean! The first layer is mechanical bond, the rest of the wet layers are chemical, if anything wrong with first, it will fail. I often use a brush on small jobs to work epoxy into the old surface to help grab every nook and sanding grove etc as epoxy is thick. Then wet layup etc. Lookup repair on Vestas you can repair a boat back to original at almost same weight. The question is, did it fail from layup issue, so 1 to 1 repair will be fine, or is it under spec'd and more glass layers needed?
@sector7offshore
15 күн бұрын
@petersgrayson All very true. Suffice it to say its not a situation I'd like to see on my boat and would expect an engineer to inspect and certify so there would be a fall back if it was an initial layup failure. Makes you wonder, though, what else may be failing that's not presently visible to you.

I really dont think we are getting the full story.....I suspect Rapido is going to replace the damage with a whole redesigned structure at some stage. As you say, once those tension strands are broken, they are not repairable, and there doesn't seem to be the area available for adequate strengthening or adding a titanium structure there.

The swim in Subic Bay waters took me back to the 80s when we we spent a year sailing around the Phillipines & Borneo. Through circumstances...you know how that goes... we had a baby macaque on board our wooden 50' sloop (do not recommend). We were anchored in Manila harbour off the Yacht Club. As you do, locals came out for a sunset drink and one a*#s*ole fed Lucy some rum in a bottle cap ( I was down below). Lucy became pretty active with the stimulation and started to leap about the cockpit. She lept for the handrail, missed, and went straight into the septic waters of Manila Bay. Caring Mama Bear lept after her! Who knew monkies could swim and the skipper through a sheet over and Lucy climbed up. I, meanwhile, made my way back to the boat, swimming through the cesspool. Lesson learnt! If you ever need a Grandma/ex-teacher/sailor/adventurer to give Ellie a spell, just message me!!!!

It is so nice to see you all enjoying your sailing life. I hope all health issues are sorted soon. Just a suggestion, perhaps a video on your personal safety measures, on deck, when it’s necessary etc. Do you have drills? I know you have lots of safety equipment like extra radios and weather info etc. I don’t sail, but it might be a nice reminder for those that do. Just a suggestion, I do enjoy being on your voyages. 🇨🇦

The reason the footing of the mast split was due to the bow being too light as I've pointed out a couple times. It's rocking up and down and slamming. Doesn't matter how much you reinforce it, it will continue to occur. You have to add weight up there.

@Riley: I truly understand the concerns raised of those in regards to carbon fiber repairs in structural elements. Of course everything is possible, but as an automotive engineer who was involved in development of repair methods in the first chassis made of carbon fiber in a German EV 10 years ago, I can share with you the we had dramatic issues when it came to structural repairs and were forced to use composite material as aluminum in those parts in case of repairs. Well the methods haven’t changed until today and had to comply with crash test requirements. So I am not a boat builder and don’t know those regulations but material properties of carbon fiber are the same. I totally agree that repairs on non-structural parts are pretty easy if you know how. However if you really consider to continue sailing to Japan this year the you will find out if the structural repair has been successful 😅😅😅

Im reading about the Rolex offshore race...which includes boats that are many, many years old...and you see bluewater boats around the world that are decades old....with ZERO substantive problems. the insanity of watching all the critical problems with a new boat is mind-blowing.

I agree. It's like buying a new car and 3 days in, you need 4 new tires, your engine block cracked, and the bumpers keep falling off. I've been watching these sailing channels like Vagabonde for years and have solidly confirmed that I would never like to live on the water. The amount of work and discomfort vs beautiful views aren't worth it. I live in San Diego and we have a hard time leaving here to go on vacation. FYI it's August 28 and the temp outside today is 79 with a cool breeze. I've used my central a/c about 10 times this whole year and only for a few hours at a time. Cheers!

Decades ago the price of materials was less and the expected performance was also less. Add to that that every design was mainly handmade. So weight wasn't an issue and the mentality was if in doubt make it stronger. Compare it with a Hilux from the 80ies and a new one
@robm.4512

A lot of older boats were built with quite heavy laminations, the science of glass composites not yet having been fully refined and with Carbon fibre products being terrifyingly expensive to use in quantity to add strength without further mass penalty. Although the effect of mass on performance was well understood, due to the known uncertainties of composite construction and the resulting “fudge factors” that uncertainty required to be applied, it ended up being relatively far down the list of design criteria when compared to more modern products. The result of all that being that many older boats are ridiculously overbuilt in many areas and therefore quite slow in comparison with recent designs. However, they also have design deficiencies that are unique to each. There’s no such thing as a flawless boat, they’re all a collection of compromises and age often adds hidden issues that don’t become apparent until something breaks unexpectedly, or gets fortuitously discovered during a refit. The issue that occurred here was, I believe, chiefly caused by a production error, not a problem with the design, it can happen and occasionally does because of the nature of hand layup in a production environment. If you want overbuilt and slow there’s a lot of boats to choose from. If you want really quick passage-making, you’re going to find the choices much more limited. Whatever, everyone has their own take on it and yours is yours but that doesn’t mean it’s everyone else’s. I hope that you actually sail and have a boat? If not I can heartily recommend joining a club, putting your name on the board as available crew for racing at weekends and being completely open and honest about your experience level. Don’t worry if you’re a novice, you’ll still be welcome aboard in a class that has a minimum crew number rule and you’ll find a ride. Cheers, R.

@@mattweidner847 you people should watch Sail GP and see how light weight and strength go together in expert engineering unlike this boat that has been a problem from the start. You can get build problems with the first out of the moulds but that is not the case here and they are still getting issues.

Which Rolex off shore race? J Boats have a very popular model which has the small problem of its rudder falling off and those boats are staples of Rolex races. No one questions the build quality of Jboats, it’s accepted that performance boats are challenging engineering and production problems. Have any performance yacht longer than 35 feet built and you will be taking it back in for repairs and refits

Not sure where you’re getting your info on carbon fibre repair dude but I assure you you can’t just patch structural parts, if that were the case F1 teams would just be repairing tubs and use them again, same with bikes with cracked frames, you don’t repair them because it doesn’t work . Cosmetic repairs are fine but I think you are going to find this out the hard way
@iane2983
16 күн бұрын
While I agree that you can't just patch carbon fiber it is not true that you can't repair them. I would guess F1 teams don't repair them due the added weight and for bikes well there are a bunch of companies that repair carbon bike professionally. The reason while most of the time they are not repaired is either due to the loss in performance like weight saving (main reason carbon is used) and sometimes is just doesn't make sense economically. Having said all that I am skeptical on the way it is repaired as I did not see it being vacuum sealed to make sure there is no air gap between the new layer of carbon.

@@iane2983 you can guess all you want but they don’t repair them because the lose all their structural integrity once they are damaged, they repair the bits attached to the chassis like diffusers etc but once the chassis has a hole in it then it has no strength to it

They sure will... Just like weighing the boat, he has no clue what he's talking about. Just lift the boat out and weigh it. They didn't even get a baseline on the device.
