Interesting how this mechanic is a bit more in-depth instead of just "eat food to gain weight". I used to take Overweight to try to conserve food in the early days, but after switching to (Very) Underweight it's much easier to return to average weight, plus the downsides of underweight are way less annoying than the ones for Overweight. I'd almost consider (Very) Underweight free points if not for the fitness loss.

@@Retanaru As someone who don't really care much for fitness, it'd be interesting to hear your justifications for why 9 fitness is necessary. I don't think I've ever had over 8 in fitness, and that was from passive leveling. I find overweight to be very manageable, and I believe the negatives you get from overweight are way more potent than simply having -2 fitness. I'm not disputing the importance of stamina. Stamina is the most important stat, but I don't think you need a high or even average fitness to maintain good stamina. If your fitness is poor, you quickly regain stamina by resting for a moment. And, there is so much else you can do in the game that doesn't require any stamina. I think Strong is way better than Athletic, since it actually helps you deal with larger groups more easily. Fitness is mostly useful when you're being stubborn and wants to quickly clean out a horde of zombies or if you're gathering lumber for a construction project. But, strength and weapon skills help with those tasks too, and their positive effects are always active.
@pite9
2 жыл бұрын
The negatives of underweight are more significant than for overweight. They're just more subtle, so maybe that's why you didn't notice them as much. Underweight makes all your swings do less dmg, so it makes every single zombie harder to kill, while overweight makes you much more likely to be out of stamina, which admittable is a huge deal, but on the other hand can easily be dealt with. The problem with underweight is that you're starting the game with a significant combat debuff. And the only way to get back your strength is to loot a ton of food. How are you going to survive the early game with your puny arms, low weapon skills and lack of weapons, while having to loot a ton of food? The fact that you can do this tells me that your game settings are way too easy for your skills, and as you regain your strength, find better weapons, level up your weapons a few levels and can eat less, the game will become way too easy for you.

I feel like either starvation and carry weight need to be decoupled from the hunger moodlet, or alternatively the moodlet needs to be based on the character's actual calorie and general nutritional needs rather than just being a separate timer. If the moodlet only signifies the sensation of being "full" or hungry and not the actual amount of fuel your body has to burn, it should only have psychological effects. IRL gorging yourself until you can't eat any more makes it harder to carry things, not easier and feeling a little bit hungry like you could do with lunch might be annoying IRL but it doesn't immediately hamper your physical abilities. Maybe the best solution is to base hunger on calorie and nutritional needs and have a separate scale from "satisfied" with psychological buffs up to "full to bursting" with sleepiness and mild physical debuffs that can be achieved by eating a sufficient quantity of food without regards to nutrition. That would penalize overeating, making it slightly harder to gain weight and serving as a mild nerf to underweight, which (as I just learned it doesn't lock you out of taking athletic) is basically free points right now.
@dangerface300
2 жыл бұрын
I guess the hunger stat on foods basically simulates the mass you're adding to your stomach, like you suggested, but there are two big problems with that: Firstly, as you said the penalties/benefits slider doesn't make any sense whatsoever, being overfull doesn't come with discomfort and aside from the fitness penalty I can say from personal experience that being overweight has more chronic effects than making it hard to jog for long periods/ hop fences; that stuff needs addressing too. Secondly THE GAME HAS A MASS VALUE for every single object you can pick up (and several that you're not really supposed to) Why on earth did the devs give each piece of food an arbitrary value for how much it fills you, after going to the effort to give it all weight beforehand? It's the height of lunacy.

So here is a funny thing: Calorie is amount of energy a food would emmit if burned in abundant oxygen. But realistically, we are not able to utilise this energy fully. We can only digest carbs, fats, and proteins for energy (preferentially in that order). So the calorie value for each food should be the sum of its carbs, fats, and protein values. Also yeah, if the hunger moodlet is based on time, not current positive/negative energy, then it's effects should be thus: Filled belly: Decreased speed, decrease in unhappiness, growth in tiredness. Empty belly: increase in unhappiness, increase in stress, pain at high levels Increased carrying capacity or dying of starvation should be instead related to actual energy value.
@Yarblocosifilitico
2 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Actually, I do intermittent fasting during the day, and I really (double and triple checked) have MORE energy if fasting. That's because the body has to spend a lot of energy for the digestion process to take place. What you eat is your fuel for more than half a day after, not for the next hours as people (and the game) seem to think.

So I guess the basic conclusion for unmodded players: Just look at the arrow next to weight. If you need it more up (gain or stop losing weight ), eat as much as you can. If you need it more down, then jog or sprint and eat less. If it's where you want it, then ignore and check again to adapt as needed.

Either that or you start doing fasting in game. Sacrifice a few hours in game at the hungry mood let before eating a meal to get you to peckish. You’ll have to repeat for a week in game to drop a pound or two as long as you aren’t eating something that’s jam packed with calories and such.

Regarding the Nutrionist trait and the state of the Wiki. With Fishing, Foraging or Trapping you can get a lot of different fish/animals/berries/fruits/mushrooms with individually differing nutritional values. For each individual size (in cm) of a given fish type these are always the same, but there's no table for it in the wiki, so the stats on fish there are kinda useless, except for the Little Bait Fish, which always comes in the same size. Also, unlike stated in the Wiki, there seems to be no way to normally gain access to a characters nutritional values without mods or debug? At least I haven't been able to find one. I haven't taken my time to compare different mushrooms or animals of the same "hunger decrease" with each other and might do that in the future to collect data on their values, but for now, that's my 2 cents. Thanks for the great video though!

Nutrition is acting weird in regards to weight in my client hosted session. I'm not running any mods that should affect nutrition, nutrition is on in the server settings, yet we've been playing for two weeks without any change in anyone's weight, either gained or lost. My obese character is basically perpetually hungry and only eats vegetables and fruits when it gets to starving level, whilst another player who is underweight has been stuffing himself full for days with meals with meat without anything happeneing. I'm not sure about my friend, but my arrow for weight is pointing down but it seems to be stuck at 105 permanently.

Eat food until the arrow shows up. Specifically non-perishables such as butter/oats/cereal/ice cream/peanut butter will all give a large calorie boost and a fair bit of carbs or fats. If you have already survived several months you will be wanting to trap/forage/fish for things that aren't veggies as veggies kinda suck on the carbs/fats front.

@@pyroparagon8945 I'm not sure what you mean. For one thing a calorie is a calorie, it doesn't matter if you're eating carrots or doughnuts, it will result in the same amount of weight gain. Secondly, potatoes have no significant amount of fats in them. And like I said in my previous message, even if they did (or you meant something else like an avocado), the fats will increase your weight by the same amount. Eating only avocados, spinach, and tomato, is not any better for losing weight than eating only ice cream, doughnuts, and bacon when it comes to equal caloric consumption.

They made weight gain harder in the last big patch. It's still really easy on the normal settings as food is everywhere, but you need to eat a little under double the calories you used to. If you only eat based on the hunger moodle you'll slowly starve to death unless you only eat something like fish or rabbits which have very high calories compared to hunger value.

Have you tested out day length's effect on hunger/thirst vs boredom and unhappiness? Saw some old info online that suggested unhappiness/boredom increases with real time, while hunger/thirst track with in game time. So if you set it to 30 min days instead of 1h, you need to eat twice as much. Curious if that is still accurate. Assuming you need to eat twice as much real time using 30 min days, think setting stat decrease to Low would offset that?

**(this comment was for another question but it'll answer yours too. If you have any other, you can ask anytime!)** At the time i didnt have the time to buy the game and play i was watching lets plays and saw the KZitemr im watching is 7/24 gaining weight and was sick of it. So automatically i thoughy this was the biggest problem in the game. When i got a chance of playing i was so determined to get my real life weight in the game which i did not know was extremely underweight in the game (so when i realized i had to gain it back.. shortly: i have some experience) Don't look at your weight and get disappointed, just look at the arrow and what it tells. Don't overeat if you don't want to gain weight you don't always need to be fed (not like you are gonna die of starvation when you stay hungry for a bit), and balance your foods as if you would do in real life to maintain your weight (like protein+veggies+carbs) if that arrow is pointing down, wait till youre slightly hungry and eat a whole bag of chips and do it until the arrow is gone. (Btw sometimes ignore the arrow because even the slightest change in your weight stats like an increase about 0.1 cal will show up as you are gaining weight, if its always up thats is a problem) It'll turn back to normal. If its pointing up you best eat more veggies and stay away from junk food, eat more salad, eat smaller portions (divide your meal into bowls and never get full, eat half of every portion until you get very hungry) let yourself get hungry if youre not leaving to loot or if you have a injury (you have to be well fed to performance better) do fitness for a whole day straight if you are a couple kilos away from your goal. I don't know about running but fitness helped a lot.(some salad and 2 days fitness got me on the road of losing weight like speedy gonzalez) Once you get the acceleration (in the process of losing/gaining weight) it gets faster and easier. Also don't mind it that much. Until you lose 10 kilos its not gonna affect your character that much.
