Birds look aerodynamic and streamlined, but under the feathers they are weird. Let's see some of the weirdest bird skeletons in the world!
This video will cover four birds with surprising skeletons.
The Kākāpō is a flightless parrot endemic to New Zealand. Its feathers hide a surprisingly long neck and legs. Then its small eye orbits are odd for a nocturnal species that might be expected to have large eyes. And you can see its flightless lifestyle in its skeleton, with reduced wings and keel.
The Burrowing Owl is a diurnal (daytime) species of owl that lives in burrows. Its legs are amazing, probably representing 2/3 of its height when standing at full height. Then it has large eye orbits for a daytime species, a relic of its nocturnal ancestry.
The Galapagos Penguin is flightless, but uses its wings to "fly" through the water in pursuit of prey. Its bones are heavy and solid compared to most bird bones. A very interesting modification of the basic bird body plan. And its skeleton reveals just how penguin legs work.
Finally, the Crimson Topaz Hummingbird shows how Hummingbirds are once again one of the more extreme birds. Its frail-looking tiny skeleton has a gigantic keel to support its flight muscles. Then it has a long neck, almost like a goose, hidden inside its feathers.
It's always fun to look at familiar things and discover something new. I hope this leaves you with some new information and an appreciation of birds!
