I remember when those came out, somewhere around 1970. They were advertised as a proposal for an Air Force survival weapon. As I recall, they were originally chambered for .221 Fireball. I guess someone realized that .223 was not much different and already in the military supply chain.
@ethanperks372
4 жыл бұрын
221 is a pistol round. 223 is a rifle round. The muzzle blast and flash from the one I shot was excessive. It's also intended to be supported with the weak hand holding down on the forearm.

Cool, I had seen the original version of these in a book years ago. I always thought they were neat since they were intended as Air Force survival weapons; didn't realize they swiveled like that though. Still, I could overlook the swiveling, but can't say I would want one if the original was full-auto capable, but we can't have such a thing without all the ridiculous BS the government forces on us. Also, that is one well-trained horse you have; that is an achievement you can be extremely proud of!

My cousin bought one of the Bushmaster pistols in the early 1970s. He shot it using a shoulder strap adjusted so it came tight when his arm was extended with the magazine angled over his forearm which made a pretty stable hold for accurate fire. Also, the charging handle was on the side instead of the top so sights were visible. And I'm pretty trigger finicky and don't recall the trigger being so obnoxious. He could hang the Bushmaster over his shoulder with it dangling between his arm and body making it disappear beneath a light windbreaker. It was a lot of fun at the time but we've come a long way since then. Here is a look at what he had. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bushmaster_Arm_Pistol#/media/File:Gwinn_Arms_Bushmaster_pistol.jpg . Jess

It was a poor rendition of the IMP, a .221 Fireball USAF survival weapon prototype. Selective fire! A friend had one of these for about a year so I got to shoot it a few times. 1) The rear sight is meant to tilt to either side (This weapon is ambidexterous) so with the weapon tilted to rest on your forearm the sight will line up. 2) Ammo; The Imp was chambered for the .221 Rem. a pistol round. This, chambered in .223/5.56, a rifle round. Thus muzzle flash/blast was pronounced! 3) The dust cover worked loose on recoil though it never affected function. The pistol grip became quite hot rapid fire through a single mag. 4) It was actually quite reliable. It shot every type of 223/5.56 we tried using! 5) Ultimately it was a piece of junk! Impossible to aim properly!

Thats neat. I get the impression it was more of an unfinished prototype. Maybe they expected an airforce order, and built up stock... only to have it fall through. Curious that Bushmaster made a different bullpup a few years later, the M17s, which seemed pretty popular.
