Excellent video. I improve flow to my cannister by adding much larger strainers at the end of the input tube in the aquarium. If the total surface area of the strainer (openings only) exceeds the cross sectional surface area of your iput tube then there will be no resistance to flow- unless of course the strainer gets clogged. Clogging can aslo happen with the weir. Making and adding a larger strainer to the input tube is another DIY video.

I like the concept, but I don't do undertank sumps. Instead I build a multichamber filter behind the "weir" very similar to what Fluval does with their cubes. I've done this in several tanks and much prefer it to HOB or cannister, or in the tank powerfilters I have used. I just haven't made the jump to cutting holes in my glass yet. I've never had a tank leak and like the idea of all water staying inside the 4 glass walls. I do want to try the overhead filter design though as it seems similar to my in-tank sump filters, but easier to maintain/move/replace.

Okay okay calm down if you really wanted to improve a canister filter or hang on back and don't want to go down the rabbit hole of weir's and returns and other stuff just add a low pressure submersible pump at bottom of the tank connect it to the inlet hose of the canister and boom done just remember only a small pump tho or you'll put too much pressure into the canister which could cause a leak from the canister 😉😅😀 this will only cost like a 8-15 $ or £
@anoxicfiltrationplenums

Yes, that sounds good if you want a big clunky pump and a power cord coming out of your aquarium. once again how do you hide such an object? If you watch the entire video you will hear me say several times “cosmetically” it is better to have a weir than keep putting things into your tank that’s going to cluttered it up and make it look stupid. If you’re going to do that then just add a SpongeBob SquarePants into your aquarium with a little bubbler and maybe a clam shell and a mermaid because you’re already going to junk up the aquarium and make it look bad. We all have choices and it just depends on how much you want to clutter your aquarium up with all kinds of objects.

@@anoxicfiltrationplenums okay a small 2inch by 2inch submersible pump sitting on the bottom of the aquarium at the back is very easy to hide all you see is a little hose same as any inlet set hobbists already use 😀 secondly most hobbists don't own a aquarium with a weir and hole drilled out so to customise to a weir system is a little out of the comfort zone 😀😳 and so adding a little submersible pump is a simple and cheap alternative.. okay in response to wires showing most hobbists aquariums are blacked out or have some sort of background 🤔 and a wire running up one corner is very hardly noticed right 👌🆗️.. Now as for the sponge Bob bubbler and that goes hey there are some big kids out there but each to there own, also yes I watched the entire video I just figured it's always nice to add a cheap alternative 😀 and something to remember a lot of hobbists feel a weir system takes away free swimming space

Hi Dr Novak, Do you have ball valves on the black PVC down pipes? Because from what I can see, if I understand it properly, if you have a problem with the green flexible pipe ie splitting or going rigid with age and being knocked accidently you will have about three litres of water in your cabinet draining from the weir box, and that is after you have noticed the leak and turned the pump off, I may be wrong of course.

Thanks for another one Doc. I am about to build a overhead SUMP as I plan to keep a 9"x7"x5" BCB in the one of the chambers and one chamber will have very good mechanical filtration. I was thinking of getting the slowest possible pump to make the water "go around" the BCB. Weir is not possible as of now. What I understand is slow movement of water should be good for the BCB to work despite compromising on water polishing (due to slow water flow) Do you think this is a good idea?
@anoxicfiltrationplenums

Actually you want the water to move fast around the BCB. The more water you get from A to B is best.

I don't get this. I seem to remember water pressure measurements were supposed to be independent of the "surface area" or "width" of the water column. That is why it's expressed in to the surface area xx per square inch/cm. So, how does a "wide" weir create more pressure than a "narrow" hose?
@sandorrabe5745

And on top of that, you've got this bulkhead down there at the bottom inside the area enclosed by the weir. What diameter is the hose that comes out there?

Thanks for the video! To sum up the video, you like the weir better because it cosmetically hides cords and doesn't slow down the flow of the pump since the strainer is moved off the pumps flow. I agree! It looks much cleaner. You spent a lot of time talking about the benefit of the canister filter being pushed by the gravity of the intake, this is true for any canister though whether it's with a weir or a U siphon. This force is why the siphon works in the first place. The only difference in speeds will be the small amount of friction the liquid experiences going through the U siphon. Your logic seems a little flawed when saying a large 6" siphon strainer won't properly suck with enough force to get particulate but your weir will. The water flow rate is based on the intake size. If your strainer has a similar area to your weir inlet, then the speed will be pretty close to the same. The only thing different is that the weir avoids the friction of the strainer being added to the system.
@anoxicfiltrationplenums

Yes that is right. In todays market it pays to use a weir than having lots of Equiment in the tank itself looking like a 1960's aquarium.
