@@freddiegillespie_05 Considering how bad so many movies have been across the century or so of filmmaking, I wouldn't call the sequel terrible at all. It's definitely not good, but it's pretty far from terrible. It didn't have the charm of this one, but it still had fun moments, and the quality of its effects was notably better. They weren't used well, but they were of better quality. Then again, this first movie really isn't that great either. It's fun and stupid, but not good. One of the biggest gripes people had with this movie is the ideal of hacking an ALIEN MILITARY NETWORK with a laptop from 90s. In extended version, there is a scene that explains this: apparently scientists based computers (hardware and software) on the technology from downed alien craft they had.

That really wouldn't have mattered anyway. While their specific binary machine code would differ, it wouldn't really be that hard for someone who understands binary to figure out. Then it would be a question of building an assembly language around that, which can translate between our coding languages and theirs. Again, not an insurmountable task at all. It would, in fact, be considerably easier than just translating their actual language. The main problem, is how long it would take. Depending on who's doing it, and how much competent help they have (which in fairness, is pretty unlikely among programmers of any era, it seems), it could be done in a matter of months. But definitely never a few hours. Then again, the other thing is that I will almost guarantee you, that the Harvesters had NO security in their digital systems AT ALL. Why would they? They're all telepathic, and they're all wholly unified as a species in their purpose. They have no concerns about anyone getting into their systems, because it's NEVER happened, in their entire history. They never went through a phase like we are with our internet and personal devices. So getting into their systems is as simple as just getting one of our computers to talk to theirs. Which, I already pointed out would take a fair bit of effort, but is far from impossible. Aliens just won't be that alien. Evolution just doesn't work that way. Exotic shit is rare. The most successful species are pretty standardized. Almost every world in the cosmos is going to be water/oxygen/carbon based, and most of the life on those worlds will at least bear a superficial similarity to species we'd recognize from Earth. They'd be clearly different, but not unrecognizably so. The least believable things in the movie is really the fact that they invaded at all...and the fact that they have telepathy (particularly inter-species telepathy).

As objects encounter the atmosphere at extreme velocities, they generate plasma by ionizing the gas molecules through friction. It's not "fire" normally, but if you generate enough of it, for long enough, it could potentially ignite other volatiles in the atmosphere. Considering the size and speed of those big city-ships, it's probable that they're generating so much thermal energy on their entry, that they're splitting the atmospheric water vapor into hydrogen and oxygen, which then ignites, creating a fireball around the ship, surrounded by "clouds". Because of the ships' shields, they'd don't give a damn about any of it. Their hull doesn't have to really withstand much, because the shield takes it all. Their unshielded parts don't seem to survive entry any better than our own equipment. The attack craft probably only survived at the end because Will is just that good of a pilot.

You have to remember this was BEFORE the "all CGI" SFX. Lots of models and real explosions here. Emmerich, the director, likes to destroy the White House. Most of his "destruction-porn" films have it being destroyed or damaged one way or another. His previous film, and first international hit, was Stargate. And they had a gag showing à firetruck crashing in a billboard with Stargate's poster on it. The scene was ultimately cut because Emmerich thought that "the end of the world wasn't the best moment for a meta joke". One of Emmerich's running gags is the dog being saved...

The Secretary of Defense, like all Cabinet members in the Executive Branch, serves at the pleasure of the President. Although it's rarely exercised, the President has the authority to fire any political appointee in the Executive Branch...for any reason. This is especially true in a time of extreme emergency or war. Only the Vice President can't be fired by the President, since he/she is an elected Constitutional Officer. To remove the Vice President, he/she would have to be impeached by the House and convicted by the Senate. If, however, the President requests the VP's resignation, they usually comply to avoid political chaos.

The reason the incoming City-Destroyers look like big balls of fire while entering the atmosphere is because their tech is so advanced, the shields protect the ship without the need to calculate optimal entry angles to reduce friction. They're just bomb-assing in and setting the air on fire around around them :P F/A-18 Hornets are not flown by the USAF btw, they're carrier fighters for the US Navy, and the ones in this film are SEVERELY underarmed. A Hornet can carry a max of 12 missiles on its hardpoints, not 4 :P

43:35 lol that cool hip-swaying walk of Jeff Goldblum's is always unforgettable to me. Do I believe Roswell happened and a downed alien craft was recovered with bodies? Yes I do. Do I believe all the Presidents are in on the reverse engineering currently going on with such crafts? Nope. Jimmy "The Reverend" played by Harry Connick Jr. was in a couple other films I think you'd find entertaining. The first is based on a real WW2 bomber called 'Memphis Belle' that came out in 1990 of which he was part of the crew on their 25th and final mission. The other is called 'Copycat' that came out a year before in 1995 that stars Sigourney Weaver. He plays a pretty entertaining psycho even if his air time is minimal.

Regarding firing the Secretary of Defense: as a Cabinet secretary, he "serves at the pleasure of the President". This means that the President can bounce him at any time without even needing to give a reason. The movie is inaccurate when SecDef says 'He can't do that!', because he not only can do that, there was literally a Supreme Court case in the 19th century that specifically upheld the President's right to do that.
