My paternal great-grandparents were Italian immigrants, and that's where they lived when they came here to California when my great grandfather got a job working at the shipping yards. They lived at project right at 3rd and Yosemite. I think my great uncle was the last to leave the neighborhood, and his girls were raised there. Most of them, when they were finally able to get houses relocated down the peninsula to Redwood City. The family from my mom's mother's side -- which is the Hispanic part of my family -- were mostly all from the Mission District, mainly the Outer Mission up by Geneva Ave. My grandma and all of her siblings went to Balboa High. In spite of all of San Francisco's problem, I do have a deep connection, and love the city very much being such a huge part of my own heritage.

When the townhomes at Mission Bay we’re getting built, they reserved a bunch of nice ones for low income housing. They were given a chance to live a peaceful life in a up and coming neighborhood. Street level cafes and restaurants opened with outdoor seating. Almost immediately, you can see guys outside selling drugs. Graffiti covered a side of the homes and no one wanted to spend $1.5M+ to live in that. So they gradually got these people out and now it’s where people want to live.
