Hi! Diaspora Returnee as well. I have been back for 2 years now - I started building my home when I was in the U.S. I kind of wish I had built it when I was here. I had to undo a lot of work that had been done, which cost me so much money and lost me so much time. I was glad to hear you mention how fundi's would disregard your instructions - that happened to me several times and I always thought it was because I was a woman. Great content - sending other returnees who are building here!

This happened to me too, fundis don’t listen, they do what they want and cost you alot more to fix their ignorance. However I do acknowledge that some of us build from the weekly/biweekly income we make, so as we work in Diaspora, we are sending money to keep the project going.

Thanks for the showcasing. The amount of information you provide is very valuable... Many thanks for this.. I liked the grills of staircases in this house, it is the exact type im planning to install. Im planning to build in Nairobi and the main issues im afraid to face is quality control and staff management... many short cuts happen and fundis dismiss the owner instructions and disregard the favorate materials,,, they even try to dominate clients and this happens specially to Female owners... i consider this as gender harassment which can the female owner report and fundi be accountable for the law. To avoid these problems, the client can prepare detailed contract/agreement that keeps client rights, ensure quality of materials and workmanship and avoids any risks that may come from the contractor then you combine to the contractor agreement... if he refuses the draft, then he is going to play bad game with you.

Ounga Commercial and others have messed up the serenity of RIAT Hills. Kisumu County is also not protecting that Hill. Soon, it will be a slum filled with nonviable subdivisions.

Yup! It's never about the house/mansion itself, it's always about the security and the immediate surroundings. I once saw a beautiful home on a golf course in Kiambu but I was informed that driving home after 7pm towards the gated community was a security issue.😮

@WuonOdidi Lol... not talking about roads. That Hill used to be a Karura Forest for those who remember. Unplanned and unregulated developments have ruined it. That is Kisumu City's "breeze circulator," and the greenery there must be PROTECTED.

Beautiful house I must say I was distracted wether to listen to your wisdom or concentrate on watching the beauty of the house. If its new house I recommend you do like house tour video. Explain what we are seeing Regarding Fundi we have the same problem in Tanzania My builder still don't believe I want balcony from the master bathroom and Bathtub by the window😅😅😅 He tried to talk to my husband and since then learned I am the project Manager😊😊 They also have tendency to ignore women.

What is your opinion on using a construction company like (Fine Urban Construction, Real Estate, and Interiors) where they handle everything for you. You just pay they do everything.
@WuonOdidi

Mixed thoughts...they can be good in some ways but challenging in others: They are often very expensive..not great for small projects: But can deliver quality work with minimal supervision
@abdiazizhashi451

It is good that you be around and personally supervise the work of your house. Even for the prestigious companies, dont rely on them totally. They might do short cuts and the victim is the owner spent his/her hard earned money on lifetime house ... if you are in Diaspora do a plan with schedule, divide into several stages, and when you come in holiday, do certain stage and go back... it may take longer time but you will get good results.

Love them but they're super expensive and getting more expensive with popularity. I know that a group of friends have one of their returnee buddies to supervise all their projects. So far it's worked out well for them.
