After thoroughly traveling along one of Appalachia's quintessential states, it's time to move on south and arrive at the next one. We've visited a few locations already in the Old Dominion, however there is a distinct region we have yet to encounter. For generations the Appalachian Mountains presented a challenge to westward settlement and development, and even today, Virgnia's southwest frontier is a lot more rural and undisturbed relative to the rest of this state. The people of these Virginia highlands share a lot more in common culturally with West Virginia and the eastern parts of Kentucky and Tennessee than the other reaches of their own state! It is here in a rather great mountain valley that the small town of Abingdon stands quiet but full of stories to tell. Settled right along an existing historical trail known as the "Great Valley Road" this area was traversed quite often for thousands of years, first by Native Americans, and later by European settlers as a direct route through mountainous terrain. Frontiersmen like the great Daniel Boone, Revolutionary War soldiers and commercial enterprisers all utilized this area for their own varied purposes but no doubt set up this location's reputation as a favorite stopping point for long distance travelers. Abingdon's historic Main Street was in fact developed directly on the trail. Although nowadays a haven for the creative arts scene, as we walk around this location, we can still find traces of its exploratory past.
