Great tip on the torch cutting to differentiate between cast steel and cast iron! I’ve never heard that one. Tried the spark test several times with disappointing and uncertain results. I’ll definitely give it a try.

Are there instances when cast steel or cast iron needs to be preheat before tacking or the first pass? What is the preheat temperature if it does?

I don't preheat for tacks...an engineer would probably say you should but I don't...and if one of the tacks cracks when I'm welding I just grind it and weld it up An engineer would also give you some specific preheat temp and procedures involving temp sticks or temperature indicating equipment...I don't do that...if the surface is above the boiling temp of water then that's about all the preheat ya need for anything So I just spit on it..if the spit sits on the metal then it ain't hot enough...if it boils immediately and slides right off the metal then it's ready to weld

I notice you appear to weave 7018 versus drag. I also noticed that on the Z pattern for the truck frame. Is that correct?

I do tend to weave 7018...especially uphill...but when you mention the Z pattern on a truck frame then the one that comes to mind is the Ol' Red log truck and if so I don't think that Z pattern was uphill 7018...it was ARC 80 downhill and in that video I tried to explain why I was using ARC 80 in that instance
