Thanks for the video. Is there any concern with welding over the slag when you come back around to the starting point?
@ZILAwelds
4 жыл бұрын
Lewis Renovation i “overran” it by about 1/4” no more than 3/8” At the very start the slag is not as thick and the part is still blazing hot. So from my point of view - no there is no concern. For example if you go vertical up weaves you want your current bead to overlap the previous by about 50% .... And i was told ( for what that is worth) that the slag on the previous bead helps “support the puddle” of the current bead and that this is not really considered “welding over slag” .... You make out of it what you want .... On LARGE parts i have seen guys having their helper on the other side with a chipping hammer and taking some slag of so they dont get inclusions on the overlap. On this tiny part visual inspection did not show any defects or irregularities .... That sprocket is for a 40 series chain, one size bigger than a bicycle chain ... working load on that sprocket is less than 15ft lbs ....

I was curious as to how you set your speed for your table, practice run first? I’ve never used a rotary table, thanks
@ZILAwelds
4 жыл бұрын
10 inches straight line on a piece (till you have the weld look and size you are shooting for) and while you do that run a stop watch ..... then divide that time by 10 that tells you how ling it takes to weld one inch ..... then put your piece in the rotary table, measure were there weld goes ..... take a piece of painter tape and mark inches ..... then let it spin and see that you get the same time per each inch .... tweak as needed .... make a test weld - and there you go

Chris Playz the “problem” with IR guns and flir cameras is surface reflection.... Depends on how shiny the part it and what color the part is - you get inaccurate readings .... On the flat black sprocket an IR thing could have worked most likely - on s shiny or chrome plated shaft or shiny aluminum plate it typically does not ( it shows much less than actual temp) So the heat crayons were good for this application.

Sir, what type of welding electrode should use for welding broken gear teeth ?? Could you see some of example number of that electrodes ??
@ZILAwelds
2 жыл бұрын
Gear teeth are hard! You cannot “just weld” them. You need to at lease pre heat, maybe the gear needs to be annealed first and then welded and then re hardened … In depending on the procedure and depending on the material the gear is made from 7019 or 11018 rods can work or the company Rockmount has a rod called polaris AAA, that could work too.

Sir,,,can possible to weld hardened material with mild steel? Please let me know...so many peoples are telling ,not possible to weld hardened material...
@ZILAwelds
4 жыл бұрын
ashok Kumar ashok Kumar yes - absolutely it is possible!!!! I welded tons of AR400 and AR500 as well as 4140 and 4130.... all of those are hard materials. I welded them to other hard material and to regular mild steel. The sprocket in this video is also case hardened the shaft is not hard- all these welds are still good. I welded over 60 shafts. You NEED to have the right pre heat, some materials also require post heat and a controlled cool down procedure. Of course you have to use the right filler material. Depending on what filler you use the weld can later be heat treated and hardened or it can NOT. Dual shield 309 wire is a good choice in a lot of cases to weld something hard but that is only of the final product is not going to be heat treated after welding. Filler material selection and welding procedure can be very complicated and different from one material to the next. It is VERY important that you ask the right questions first and you read all the specifications of the filler you plan on using. If at all possible ask the customer for a pre certified welding procedure.

Thank u so much sir,,, can u share which grade welding wire is to be used for weld hardened material..like co2 weld or tig weld wire...
@ZILAwelds
4 жыл бұрын
@@Ashok-jw8dg I use mig or dual shield typically - you can also use stick welding (arc welding) out tig welding - tig is the least preferable in my opinion since it is hard to find some of the filler rods with tig you also have to really monitor your pre heat and inter pass temperature since it is a very cold process ....

Zilla, although you can use a cutting torch to heat your work up it is much better to use what they call a Rose Bud which will give you a much better full surface heat. I used to work for a company in Southampton Pennsylvania where we did 2 centrifuges for the US navy to train fighter pilots. I had to weld 8" plates with a rose Bud underneath while I was welding on top because of the need to not allow the medal to shrink too fast or the welds would crack and about $800,000 would have went down the drain. Just saying.
@ZILAwelds

R Reichel i don’t know if the close up in the video gives you a wrong idea about the size of the part ... but this is a sprocket for a 40 series chain. That is about the size of a bicycle chain! It ways barely more than an ounce .... i probably could have preheated that with a lighter .... lol I understand your general concern - However i can not share it on this particular part. With like a # 6 rosebut i wouls have either heated and bent the shaft too much or 80% of the flame would have just blown in the air next to the sprocket You know - there is a concern about run out of the shaft after welding .... Most if those shafts were less than .010” some as much as .015” With a #6 rosebut i would have been lucky if 3-4 times the run out was all i would have had...

@@ZILAwelds I see. Could you achieve this same weld with fluxcore (non-gas) MIG?
@ZILAwelds
3 ай бұрын
@@patricklacson maybe yes. You have to “find the right one” There are well over ( lets say ) 30 different kinds of gas less ( self shielded, open arc, innershield ) wires out there. You have to pick the right make and model…. Tensile strength and elongation are 2 big but not the only factors to look out for. If you have the right one, it is definitely possible , if you go to harbor freight and buy a roll because you have the mind set : gas less wire is gas less wire there are no differences anyway …. Then i would probably be cautious doing a job like this…. There are single pass gas less wires, multi pass gas less wires … 60,70,80,90,100 thousand psi tensile strength …. Elongation from 18 to over 30% ….. and also make sure its a joining wire not a hard surfacing wire …. A 309 stainless gas less wire might work good in an application shown in this video but a 308 stainless wire would have catastrophic results…. I hope this helps somewhat and does not confuse you more If you want to go on lincolns website and so sone reading …. Nr 211 212 232 233 those are you common meat and potatoes kind of wires …. From memory: 1 out of those 4 fits the bill 80%+ of the time ….
