I think you can also mix something in the concrete to increase its water-impermeability as it were, a type of wax or some-such.

Your design plan for water intrusion on the back wall makes a lot of sense! Good-intentioned people will always try to think of the things that will go wrong, but nothing beats the "boots on the ground" experience of watching the land behave over time. Always fun seeing the fun moments playing with Bea. She's a lucky dog having you two for parents! That welding is something else! Always impressed how you take on the challenge of learning new skills!

It’s probably a little late now😃but… just plastic against the rock is not what you want. The reason is that the plastic just gets punctured. I use a modified bitumen/rubberized membrane and the manufacturer still recommends to use a flexible foam board to protect the bitumen from getting punctured. I guess the heavy plastic is better than nothing but just food for thought for anyone else building a foundation wall against the grade.

Very good advice, Robert,... for the next time. :-). Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

@@ShimodaLife long time follower. I was watching your very early videos. Amazing the progress you’ve done and I’m pretty blown away that a lot of the elements are your first try. Btw I usually just shovel some dirt at the bottom gaps. Someone suggested foam but if only use that for a tricky fill. Just a shovel or two of dirt is usually enough. I'm wondering if it might be a good idea (never poured concrete, so just spit-balling here!) to have a 2x4 support horizontally placed across the backs of the forms? This might help prevent bowing out of the forms, and also give the support 2x4s something solid to shore up against? Of course, by this time, the concrete might already be poured... Of course, you may have already thought of this.

That's where the galvanized pipe comes in. We run horizontal piping, 3 or 4 levels of it, along the outside of the forms. Check out this vid: kzitem.info/news/bejne/pYac2GegnoenfWUsi=skiQFns3DXVj_I7n Cheers.

@@ShimodaLife Yes - I saw this video, but when I saw the 2x4s being set up, thought you were going to use wood only. Thanks for the advice!

making good progress, any new skill learned will be valuable for the future, besides no one will see your initial welds behind all that concrete.

whats the final sq footage going to be?

About 1,100 sq ft. That's my maximum allowable size to be able to self-build here in my part of Japan. Anything bigger and I'd need a licensed/insured construction company.
