We had company coming into town and the tank pressure was cycling just like this one. I drained the tank as per your suggestion and it fixed the problem. I installed a new switch while I was at it. Thank you for your professionalism, honesty and knowledge

Glad to see a repair that doesn't involve an A/C! Hopefully the pump motor holds up after all the short-cycling caused by the lack of air cushion prior to drain&refill.

Back in '06 I had a well guy come and put a pump in. Was the middle of January (of course), and I was working 60 hours a week - no chance in hell I was doing it! Before they came, I checked the cut-in, cut-out, and air pressure. When I got home from work, the pump was cycling exactly like that one here! The guy let my air down from 30 psi to 10, and screwed with both the high cutoff and the spread, so it was kicking on at 10 psi and kicking off at 15. I was pissed! To top it all off, the thing pumped dirt for a month afterward. I had to flush piles of crap out of all my filters, my washing machine, and totally clean out my water softener. My wife was here when the guys came, so I think they were going to try and swindle her into a tank replacement. Pricks!! I ended up going to a larger size tank about 2 years later, just to cut down on the cycling a bit more. Pump is 10 years old now, and still hanging in there, even after the 1,000 cycles it went through it's first day. Tough finding honest people these days!

Thanks for the video. A question. This tank does not have a bladder. After you drained completely and started to refill, why didn't we hear any air coming out of the Air Volume Control Valve? Does this kind of a system need a snifter to let a small amount of air into the tank to keep it from becoming waterlogged. Was the pressure contacts cycling only when a faucet was opened or did it remain cycling when all faucets were closed.

Hey Steve! I have a Galvanized Pressure tank, that developed a pin hole leak on the nipple that connects inlet piping to the tank. It has a submersible pump > snifter valve with check valve >pressure switch > pressure tank. The pressure tank has a float set at 40-60 psi. The tank also has a Air Volume Control on it. to replace the nipple that has a hole in it, the tank will drain since I have to take apart the inlet piping. My question is, How do I go about getting air back in the tank when refilling it, Or do I just turn the pump on and that will suffice as far as getting compressed air in the tank?

The pressure switch didn't need to be replaced. The tank was waterlogged. The reason the system worked again is because you drained the water from the tank while you were replacing the pressure switch, which brought needed air back into the tank. You also mentioned if it didn't work this time you would need to replace the tank. That is also incorrect. The components of the tank make it operate. A tank only needs to be replaced if it is leaking. The bleeders in the well were probably the culprit all along and you'll be going back there again and again and keep replacing switches and tanks until you learn how these systems operate. These systems are easy to properly diagnose, and I feel sorry for the people you charged.

I totally agree with you Mike. I enjoy watching all Steve's video but he went a bit overboard on replacing parts that were not necessary. I would like to see a ball valve near the middle and the bottom of the tank so the homeowner could bleed off the water in the tank periodically.

I have same kind of tank but had air valve on side so I replaced it with air volume control on it and ran plastic tube to F&W pump opening at top of side where both black plastic pipes run to well. Was doing good until I replaced waterlogged air volume control with new one and now is repeatedly short cycling even after letting water out and shutting off valve at bottom. I have done this twice and still short cycling. What do I do now??????????

Didn’t quite get what was causing the problem. I understand it was short cycling. The fix was draining and refilling? I saw where you took the piping apart leading to the pressure switch and declared it was fine. Someone else had worked on it and changed the factory settings to 40-55 psi. What would you reset them to factor spects? I believe you should do a recap of the job at the end also. Helps in case someone misses something important
@citizen762

the tank was waterlogged, no air pocket inside on top. pump switches on, then cuts off immediately because its full and water can not be compressed. The gauge pegs to over the 60lb cut off and immediately cuts pump power - cycles over and over. Once drained, air was let in. The switch wasn't the issue. Its likely a bad AVC air volume control valve, (the piece the gauge was screwed into) which he didn't replace. These get clogged or stuck and don't operate to regulate the air volume inside as designed and waterlogging happens.

Why did you put in a new switch? It looks like the old one was cycling between 30 and 60 fine. Isn't there a bladder tank made for pressure control of bladderless tanks like you use for hydronic heating systems?
@Okanagan48

Why would you use a 30 - 50 versus a 40 - 60 switch, isnt it better to have a higher pressure?
@Rickengle300
5 жыл бұрын
May not need it, I have a second story, and my pump is 100 feet from my house, I run 43-63 just to get adequate water pressure at the faucets up there. If I lived in a one story, and had pump closer id be putting unnecessary strain on plumbing. It’s just not needed, and it’s uses extra energy to reach higher psi of course. Lastly I understand that the higher the psi in your bladder tank/system the lower amount of available water in general. Imagine a ballon full of water in a tank, and pumping in air around the ballon (essentially squeezing the balloon) The more air you pump in the more you squeeze the balloon. (Higher psi) So basically a higher psi requires a higher precharge in bladder tank to begin with. Then you’re pressing water into that balloon combating the pressurized air that’s all around it, raising the psi. Long story short higher pressure means more air less water in your bladder tank, And less pressure means more water less air.. so you can actually store much more water lower pressure settings, which means less motor starts and stops as well. I’m rambling

If you don't know what your doing back off . This is a self charging system with bleeders in the well . What's on the side of the tank is an air eliminator to prevent over charging. Bleeders are plugged up with iron . My man you are doing a temporary fix.

Doesnt that bladderless tank need an air volume control since it didnt have an air schrader valve?
@markfothebeast

I believe you are correct. I never fully understood how the bladderless tank system functions. The Shrader looking valve is actually called a snifter valve. It draws in air to bleed the water out of the pipes to the well to stop them from freezing (or so that's what my understanding).
