For the final vlog, Jonathan and Dan are at the Roman town ruins in Caerwent, South-East Wales, to film the introduction scenes for the documentary. Christianity first came to Wales through ordinary Roman Christians in the 1st century, bringing the good news of Jesus with them. By the 3rd century, the great stone walls at Caerwent were constructed, which formed the backdrop of much of our filming that day, and are in excellent condition considering they're 1,700 years old But, in those early centuries, Wales was far from being Christianised. Paganism was still dominant, and when the Roman armies retreated from our shores in the 5th century, the pagans quickly destroyed as much of the church as they could. It was then that Wales entered what is often called ‘The Age of the Saints’. Men like St. Illtud, St. Dyfrig and St. David were ancient missionaries, and this movement helped mould Wales into the unique nation it is today. The Welsh language, Welsh place names and Welsh literature all had their beginnings at this time and, as a result, Christianity spread not only throughout Wales, but across the borders and surrounding seas as well. Holy men in small boats, crossing wild seas to spread the gospel.
