Wood is wood! It all burns! I like the Knotty stuff best. Cause it burn hotter and longer. I even use the bark for kindling> Its starts fast, hot and longer than chopping up wood kindling

Timely comment. Indeed, wood is wood to a lot of people. Some of that punky stuff I chopped off in this video is stuff I actually just burned inside this past week. Yes it will burn, but there are a few things to be aware of. Even on a good piece of wood, the bark holds moisture. This is amplified on the punky pieces. Lots more potential for insects in those punky pieces too and they also produce a ton of ash and they burn down quickly. If you like tending to the fire in nice predictable intervals, then don't burn the punky wood. If you're ok tending a little more often and even playing with the damper a bit more to get the punky stuff to burn instead of just smolder, then burn it. Or maybe best of both worlds, mix a piece of punky in with each load of good stuff.

@@Redneck_Ed That is true to. Not counting the moss on the bark. But it dries outs and burns up to. The bark does dry out faster if off the logs, and to the logs dries out faster to > YOUR VERY CORRECT. I'am trying to get people to use that bark as well > IT BURNS TO

@@426superbee4 I am guilty of this. On good wood, the bark is tight. After it dries for 2 years, the bark lifts right off. What I should be doing is saving that separated bark for kindling. My 2023 goal...save the bark! Thanks for watching the channel!!

Why are you not using the bark pieces indoors? Also what did you use to lock down that green switch?

Once the oak trees die, that outer sap wood turns into something like a fungus. When it's really bad, it even smells almost like mushrooms. You can't burn that inside or you will need to clean your chimney out several times per season. For the switch, I just drilled a hole in the plastic one each side and inserted a small bolt to hold it down.

The best fire starter is? Take the chain saw and cut with the grain to make LONG STRAINS of kindling! FAST AND VERY EASY. 1 match will start it up FAST> I got a great deal on my log splitter! It just like the 1 at Northern Tool that they sale for 600 bucks! WHAT A RIP OFF! Its a Power Horse, 8 ton Vertical Horizon log splitter for 91 bucks with free shipping. Sure i have to wait 16 days for it to get here from CHINA. but worth it. Reason i went Vertical Horizon? So i don't have to pick up those Heavy logs, just roll it on it. > I'am going to miss my work outs using my mauls! Nope! I will still use them! Even at the my age of 70 years old. What keeps me in shape, and strong! 💪💪> i will use the log splitter on the GNARLY STUFF > I Wrestle with, and beat the hell out of them, and kick them around! 😆

HA HA, being 74 years old, you wore my arse out with all that up and down. I have a HF 5 ton electric without a foot switch, mounted on a left over equipment stand from my wood shop. I have the switch clamped permanently in the on position. When splitting, I bring the rounds to the splitter in a 2 wheeled wheel barrow, and as I split them, they get tossed into a 4 wheel garden cart. I have a swivel seat bar stool to sit on and just operate the push lever with my right hand. On the opposite side of the splitter I have a wooden table the right height to catch the other split, so it does not hit the floor or ground. I also have an old BS hand axe that I found at a flea market for $2.00 that I reconditioned and use to separate the splits if necessary. You see, my knees are worn out, and my back gets very sore if I do too much deep bending, but you will learn....that all comes with age! HA HA

I've learned that when it comes to splitting wood, everyone has their own method that works for them or for their body. For me, getting up and down works, lifting a wheel barrel or pulling a cart doesn't. Part of the beauty of KZitem, we all get some exposure to various techniques that work and techniques that do not work for each of us.

I burn wood with bark on it in my fireplace. Does that make me a bad person? Seriously, what is your reasoning for not burning bark? Does it reduce the soot? Does it reduce the btu's that much?

I cleave off a lot more than just bark for wood thats in the condition shown in this video. These oaks will die quickly from fungal diseases and when rhat happens all of the outer sapwood turns to fungus within a year. It is light as a feather and smells like mushrooms. Problem is that it will then continue to draw moisture and bugs and inhibit the inner good wood from drying. It's best to just cleave off the outer inch or so which burns ok in the open outside fire pit. Now if I get a good live oak or one that just died, then it's game on. The entire tree gets burned in the wood stove.

How did u get foot pedal to work I plugged the wen in and it doesn't work what did u exactly do thanks
@Redneck_Ed

At 03:08 , you can see the switch on the Wen with a piece of duck tape over it. Over that is a bolt. I simply drilled 2 holes in the plastic and inserted the long bolt so that the on/off button is always pressed down into the on position. Once you do that, then the footswitch controls power to the unit.

The Wen splitter looks like just what I need. I don't have huge amounts of wood to split each year, but with high oil prices and being retired, I will be burning more wood. And, my wife could probably run it too. Thanks for sharing! - Rick

Why didn’t you block up the wagon to a working height to allow you to stand?
@Redneck_Ed
10 ай бұрын
Mostly just personal preference. The splitter comes with hardware to elevate it without needing the wagon, but I prefer keeping it near the ground so that I don't have to lift up logs and because I can keep my back in a better posture position with it like you see in the video. If it were elevated, I'd bend over ever so slightly for extended periods of time which is bad on my back. When I get older and my knees give out, I'll just have to give up splitting completely I guess.

My only concern about an electric splitter is I read that some people have been hit in the face and/or have had chunks fly several feet. Does your foot pedal control how fast or hard the splitter splits?
@Redneck_Ed
2 жыл бұрын
The ram runs at a constant slow rate and speed is not impacted by the pedal. Your concern makes sense because pieces can fly, but typically they shoot out past the wedge. I have another video where I mention this fact: kzitem.info/news/bejne/0JWl1Jl-g4KLm4o . I've never had a piece fly in a dangerous way toward my face / perpendicular to the splitter. You can tell 95% of the time which pieces are at risk of flying out by watching the wedge and seeing whether or not it sinks into or cracks the wood in the first
