Dude you’re mixing fish that shouldn’t be together. Also that pleco doesn’t belong with African cichlids that’s why he died plus you had no driftwood for him. Sounds like you’re trying to make a business out of fish keeping. First thing you should think of is making sure those tanks resemble their habitat. The lakes in Africa look nothing like that also the temperature has a lot to do with it. Anyway just passing on some advice. Good luck

I use #1 100% silicone and you have to get hides for the cichlids they need territory to defend and if they don’t have a spot they will run the whole tank as territory

I am not sure what i got but it did say in the description that it was for making aquariums. I will also have to look into picking up some ore hides for the smaller tanks kinda like the 55 but even with all those hides i lost 2 for sure and possibly 3 fish.

Man that’s a rough thing to come back from vacation from Gabriel, side note you gave me a chuckle with your silicone job. Made me think of when I did mine. I think I had white silicone I just didn’t want to go back to the store to exchange it but I honestly don’t even notice it anymore. I’m sure other do but if it holds water that’s all that matters 😁👍

Dear Gabriel: I used to soak plastic hides, in bleach water, to rid them of algae. But, I’ve found that the creek rock, in my location, is aquarium-safe. I discovered this, by putting drops of agricultural-grade vinegar, on sample rocks. Since there was no reaction, whatsoever, (such as fizzing or bubbling) I know that they are inert. In my location, it is illegal to collect rocks, from public land. However, I’ve found several land-owners, who have creeks, on their properties, and are happy, to allow me, to collect rocks, for my hobby. Now, I just put rocks, in my crawlspace, once they get covered, in algae, and replace them, with rocks, which have been dry for weeks or more. The dead algae, on such rocks, doesn’t appear to come back any faster than clean rocks get covered in algae. The drying-out period seems to destroy the algae spores, as well. Personally, I don't care for plastic plants. I’d look into getting all the creek rock I need, for hardscape and remove the plastic plants. But, this is my preference. If you like plastic plants, use them. Just be advised that plastic does break down, after a long time, and may be detrimental to your pets and plants. I’m very sorry your hobby suffered, during your absence. I pray you have good success, moving forward. Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar

That is cool how you collect and check your rocks. I too will have to go out and about to pick up some rocks i can introduce to my smaller tanks to give the fish more places to hide. Are you in the US? Thank you for stopping by with your encouraging words brother.

Oh so sorry to hear about your fish. That's fish keeping sometimes it's happened to most of us. As for the bleach solution I used an old plastic sprayer bottle that had already a bleach solution from Walmart. Any spray plastic sprayer bottle will work. Just make sure to rinse very well. Have a wonderful day my friend.

It's happened to us all Gabe so you have my sincere empathy buddy. When it comes to rocks I use a 10/1 solution. 10 cups of water to one cup of bleach and I boil the rocks in that mix. I will then boil them again in fresh water. Only takes 10 minutes once the water starts to boil so you can have them clean in half an hour. All the best mate !

Don’t clean with bleach, it will only make matters worse, the algy is takin in all the excess nitrates and maybe amonia/nitrite. You bij killing it you are only treating symptoms. Try to find the reason why the algy grows in the first place. Probably due to overfeeding/not enough water changes/to much swinging water pirameters/no plants that take in excess nutrients. I would suggest to add some easy fast growing plant such as floating plants and fast growing stem plants so you have less nutrients waste and have to do less waterchanges. This will reduce algy and keep your pirameters more stable, this is especially handy if your gone for a few days. Good luck

@@joeyvisser9868 Wonderful advice Joey. I thank you from my side. I do have a planted aquarium and have been thinking about duckweed but so many people have advised me against it. I know it will take out all the bad stuff and can be hard to keep it in check but being retired I can net it out when needed. Is that something you would recommend. My tank is heavily planted but I get algae on my rock and the worst is the green hair algae. Your advice will be welcomed. Thank you ! I don't overfeed, or at least I don't think I do ????? One feed of a pinch of flakes one day and then next some blood worms for my frogs, then I leave it two days and repeat. It really is a balance.

@@joeyvisser9868 Thank you for the advice, i do weekly 25% water changes. I have just recently reduced how much i feed, and am trying to leave the light on for less time. These cichlids eat plants so kinda hard to do that, but im hoping these current changes do the trick. thanks for stopping by.

@@Lee.Willcoxduckweed is perfectly fine, but make sure that it covers only half of the watersurvace at maximum. Otherwise there won’t be enough gas exchange. I prefer, water lettuce, Limnobium Laevigatum and Salvinia Natans, because there roots are longer so they make nice cover for little fish and make bigger fish feel more secure. Also they grow a bit slower so you don’t have to thin it out as often. But still they grow relatively quick and are very easy available. Another option is Hydrocotyle leucocephala. This plant can also be used as a floating plant. And ones it is astabilished it will grow really fast. Also it won’t cover the whole water surface so you don’t have to worry about thinning it out as often. Hope this helped you out!
