So should we get a new OEM basket and then have you mod that one? Wouldn't the used basket have wear, if all OEM baskets "go downhill" from new even before 10,000? So wouldn't it be smarter to mod a new basket than a used basket to keep a tight fit from the get go? Ya know what I mean?

There is "normal" wear and then there is wear that comes from a poorly engineered design. When I build a new OEM basket I do everything exactly like I do on a good used basket. New baskets are bored to fit a bronze bearing in the aluminum casting and this bearing is bored/finished to fit the steel gear after its bearing surface has been machined to a much smoother finish. Top plates are fitted with a bearing assembly that the factory, simply does not have to start with. No one else has figured out how to make this work, WERKS is the ONLY source! Machine work on the inner plate is the same with new or used. There are other details, but in the end both are built to a much higher standard than the factory design can offer out of the box. There is one, and only one real advantage to a new OEM basket. There will be zero wear on the basket fingers. These clutch baskets don't wear the fingers as much as certain other makes and models and it never seems to be a problem on used clutch baskets. But, if looking for a reason to go with a new basket, that certainly is a positive reason to spend the extra money. You will likely never realize any difference however.

Thanks for posting this. I'm a friend of Kith's and see his bike on a weekly basis. For such a high mileage Vstrom, it does ride remarkably well. I need to ride it after the new clutch basket install to see what it feels like. That's pretty amazing his clutch basket had such little wear other than the bearing free play.

Glad you enjoyed it! Not often you get to inspect something like this. BTW, the bike this came out of now has about 438,000 miles on it. Engine has never been apart!

This bike does get synthetic oil but the oil changes are done at higher mileages than the factory maintenance schedule. It is highway miles, and a LOT of them!

Great video, Do you know the oil used on this bike, and the maintenance schedule, also what kind of use does the bike have, I guess mostly highway with little and smoth gear shifts, the wear for that mileage is amazing. thanks!

I have a 2003 dl1000, and the chudder is bad and it only has 45k kilometres on it. I’m in Canada and I’d like to get it fixed if possible but I’m no mechanic. What should I do?

Go to the website www.werksparts.com first. Look over the details to learn about what is going on. It also covers the 3 ways to get the WERKS upgrades for your 2003 Vee. There is an installation video and an FAQ page that will answer many questions. Then send an e-mail to info@werksparts.com with further questions and if ready to proceed send shipping info and what parts you need.

The clutch basket has almost the same movement new from factory. Clutch chudder is common problem on this model

New OEM baskets do have some movement. Side by side you would still see that the new one is a lot tighter. But compare a WERKS modified basket and you will see it is very difficult to find any play in the assembly. What movement there is would be simply loading the first stage spring!

Highway miles. No clutch load. This would be an outlier. I've got 150k on my SV1000s in Los Angeles traffic. It started to make noise at idle with clutch released. I just changed the clutch plates, needle bearings, slave and master cylinder rebuild. I'll see if that resolves. What's difference between your basket and ordering an OEM?

Camilo, SV's are harder on baskets and yes the riding you do is harder on them too! I doubt that the changes you made will have any effect on the noises and vibrations. I actually would be very surprised if any of the clutch discs or the needle bearing were showing any wear outside service limits. A new OEM basket is the same thing you have now. When new it will do a pretty good job. But, they simply won't stay that way and wear creeps in making them go downhill. You may be lucky that yours has held up as well as it has, some are just tighter from the start and do last longer. I will also tell you that you are probably not realizing just how loose it is. Install a new OEM or modified basket and you will see what I mean. A modified clutch basket from WERKS, either done on a new OEM unit or a good used basket, will be smoother than a new OEM basket from the start. The difference is that the WERKS unit will stay that way. Just as good as when installed as the miles pile up. I have them with over 100,000 miles and they are still tight and working perfectly!

WERKS Parts LLC what you're saying makes sense. I'll see what happens when I fire it up later today. What's the cost/availability of the basket these days? I've got a micrometer and can measure key components that may also be worn. I'm not a machinist - simply a hobbyist that's acquired a number of tools over the years. Thanks for the info.

Camilo, if you send your basket in for modification the total cost is $310. That includes return shipping. I usually ship back the next business day after receiving them. 2-3 days to arrive after that. There is also and exchange program where I ship a basket built on a good used core. That adds $120 up front, but when you return your old basket unbroken there is a $100 refund. So net cost on that is $20. Makes it nice to do the complete job all at one time! I also keep new OEM clutch baskets with full WERKS modifications in stock. No core return required. $595 shipped.

WERKS Parts LLC right on. That sounds like a solid/fair deal. Thanks. I'll be honest, I hope I don't need you but I'm glad you're available, you still carry the part and that you're an option in the likely event I've been bitten by the clutch chudder bug. This bike runs perfect. I'm not ready to give it up over something as simple as this.

i still got the noise at idle, btw. it's not as loud as it was before but still sounds ducati'esque, which i would prefer it didn't. when i get the vibration symptoms, i'll hit you up. thanks for clarifying everything. i checked your website. all seems good. we'll likely chat soon enough. i just wanna ride right now so i'm gonna hit the canyons in my spare time and have fun until it's time to turn wrenches again. thanks!

I've got a 2006 DL1000 with 19,000 miles on it and it has pretty bad chudder. What happens if I just keep riding it? Is catastrophic failure waiting to rear its ugly head in the near future, or is it just a performance and comfort issue? Thanks.
@werkspartsllc7856
5 жыл бұрын
Not a catastrophic failure! At that mileage it is just getting bad and will get worse. But they don't explode or cause you to trailer it home. Call it performance or comfort, but it changes how you ride the bike. You miss the rpm range where these bikes really shine by keeping them above 4000 rpm. You can install a new OEM basket, but once you know what chudder feels like you will see it start in by 10,000 miles most of the time. Install a WERKS modified basket and you should never need to worry about your clutch again.
